Tanzania Holds In-Service Training for Volunteer Chinese Teachers

On May 19th, the In-Service Training for Volunteer Chinese Teachers in Tanzania centering “Integration, Communication, Learning, and Improvement” was held at the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The representative of the president of the University of Dar es Salaam, Jing Wei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Xu Chen, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, the representatives of the Teacher Selection and Training Center of Confucius Institute in Zhejiang Province, all the volunteer Chinese teachers, some of the state-sponsored Chinese teachers and local teachers attended the opening ceremony, and the training kicked off in the national anthems of China and Tanzania.

Xu Chen said in his speech that the large number of Chinese teachers in Tanzania fully demonstrates the achievements of the development of international Chinese education. He also reviewed the history of the friendly exchanges between China and Tanzania, and encouraged teachers to be the inheritors of China-Tanzania exchanges and promoters of the cooperation between China and Tanzania in practical cooperation to set up a high-speed railway of mind for the friendship between China and Tanzania in the new era.

Ruth, representative of the President of the University of Dar es Salaam, pointed out in her speech that the Confucius Institute plays an important role in promoting the friendly cooperation between Tanzania and China. The Confucius Institute provides Tanzanian students with a platform to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture, making more and more Tanzanian students aware of the important role that culture plays in social development. She hoped that this in-service training will further improve the teaching skills of teachers and train more Chinese talents.

Jing Wei expressed her greetings in her speech to all the Chinese teaching educators in Tanzania. She said that since the establishment of diplomatic relationship 55 years ago, China and Tanzania have achieved fruitful cooperation in various fields. The two Confucius Institutes and one Confucius Classroom in Tanzania have always been responsible for meeting the needs of local Chinese teaching and promoting exchanges between China and Tanzania. Since 2011, the Confucius Institute Headquarters has dispatched more than 260 volunteer Chinese teachers to Tanzania. It is currently the country with the most volunteers in Africa. Volunteers have won the respect of local people and the friendship of the people of Tanzania with their professional ability and dedication. The in-service training provides a platform for learning. It is hoped that the teachers will continue to work hard to grasp the opportunities in Tanzania, go on to intensively work in their posts, improve their quality and efficiency, and continuously improve their business capabilities. At the same time, it is hoped that everyone can learn more about Tanzania culture and local language, so as to promote different civilizations to learn from each other in a more inclusive manner and strive to become the messenger of the mutual exchanges between China and Tanzania.

This is the first time that Tanzania has organized an in-service training for volunteers. The training uses a variety of ways, including special topic lectures, teaching observations, and exchanges and sharing. It covers topics that the volunteers concern, such as classroom management, cross-cultural communication, physical and mental health, and consular protection. Volunteers expressed that they have gained a lot, and the training is practical and pertinent. It is beneficial for them to learn from their experiences, learn from others’ strengths, and better adapt to their work and life abroad. Meanwhile, they feel the care and warmth from the Headquarters and will make better achievements in their posts as well.

During the training, Jing Wei paid a visit to the Confucius Institute and visited Professor William Anangisye, President of the University of Dar es Salaam. The two sides exchanged views on the current situation of Chinese teaching in Tanzania and the construction of the Confucius Institute. President of the University of Dar es Salaam expressed that he will continue to support the development of the Confucius Institute and strive to build the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam into one of the best Confucius Institutes in Africa.

After the training, the delegation of the Headquarters visited the volunteers’ dormitory, discussed with the volunteer teachers, and patiently answered questions raised by them on the use of teaching materials, development of teaching materials, career development, cross-cultural communication, physical and mental health, and volunteers’ lives.
