On April 29th, President Xi Jinping held a meeting at the Great Hall of the People with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of Portugal, who attended the 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and paid his state visit to China.

After the meeting, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of three cooperative agreements on establishing strategic dialogues. Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Augusto Santos Silva, Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs signed the Cooperative Agreement between the Chinese Confucius Institute Headquarters and the Portuguese Ministry of Education on Chinese Language Education in Portuguese Secondary Education.

According to the agreement, Portugal will further promote Chinese language teaching and Chinese culture in local schools and communities, and open Chinese language classes in the humanities and social sciences courses and vocational and technical courses in Portuguese high schools. The Confucius Institute Headquarters will select and dispatch Chinese language teachers to Portugal as requested, and provide Chinese language textbooks.

With the strong support of China and Portugal, the “Chinese craze” is heating up year by year in Portugal while the Chinese language teaching is thriving. So far, 5 Confucius Institutes have been established and 5,271 students have registered in 2018 in Portugal.

On the 40th anniversary of the establishment of China-Portugal diplomatic relations, the signing of this cooperative agreement is of great significance. The implementation of this program will push forward the people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries and the development of language teaching, making greater contributions to deepening the understanding and friendship between the Chinese and Portuguese people.
