First Confucius Institute in Tunisia Inaugurated

On April 10th, local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of Carthage was inaugurated in Tunisia. Present at the event were Khalbous, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ben Ouda, President of the University of Carthage, Wang Wenbin, Chinese Ambassador to Tunisia, Bai Guangming, Cultural Consul of the Chinese Embassy in Tunisia, and Liu Hong, President of Dalian University of Foreign Languages. The Confucius Institute at the University of Carthage is the first Confucius Institute in Tunisia. It has been jointly established by Dalian University of Foreign Languages and the University of Carthage.

In her speech at the ceremony, Ben Ouda thanked all parties in both China and Tunisia for their efforts in the establishment of the Confucius Institute, and emphasized that the Confucius Institute would contribute to educational and cultural exchanges between Tunisia and China.

Liu Hong pointed out that Tunisia is a land with a long civilization and diverse cultures. She hoped that the Confucius Institute would make its own contributions to the integration of different civilizations. She said that the establishment of the Confucius Institute would promote the development of Chinese language teaching in Tunisia and also promote language, educational and cultural exchanges between China and Tunisia.

Wang Wenbin said that the inauguration of the Confucius Institute marks the importance of the outcome achieved at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and exemplified the friendly cooperation between China and Tunisia under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. He believed that the Confucius Institute at the University of Carthage would flourish, thus creating a good platform for the local people to learn the Chinese language and culture, and building a bridge of communication between the two peoples.

Khalbous said that China had been developing rapidly in recent years, and Tunisia was willing to cooperate with China in education, technology, economy and other fields. The inauguration of Tunisia’s first Confucius Institute at the University of Carthage marks a new stage in bilateral cooperation in education. Tunisia was willing to work with China to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in higher education, scientific research and other fields, and to make greater strides in bilateral relations.

At the ceremony, Tunisian students sang the Chinese folk song “Jasmine Flower” and the Tunisian folk song “A Night Under the Jasmine Tree”, performed Chinese and Tunisian folk dances, and recited poems. The students’ fluent Chinese and excellent performances won warm applause from the audience.
