On April 7, Sunday, the Chinese teachers at the Pusat Bahasa Mandarin at Malang State University (PBMMSU) were intensely and orderly organizing the 18th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students East Java Regional Final.

The Chinese teachers in the Pusat Bahasa Mandarin at the University of Al Azhar (PBMUAZ) were also working overtime. Upon the completion of busy work in Djakarta Regional Final, they were once again engaged in the preparation of the national final to be held in the Indonesia’s capital at the end of this month.

On September 27, 2018, the University of Al Azhar, which was located in Djakarta, held “Confucius Institute Open Day”. The wonderful activities attracted nearly 300 teachers and students from the University of Al Azhar, the University of Indonesia, State University of Jakarta, Xinya College of Tarumanagara University, London School of Public Relations, the University of Darma Persada and other universities. It is the “normal” for the Chinese teachers in several Confucius Institutes in Indonesia to carry out conventional teaching in weekdays and carry out various cultural exchange activities in weekends and holidays. Thanks to their efforts and whole-hearted cooperation between Chinese and Indonesian partners, the Confucius Institute has become a garden for Indonesian students and residents to learn Chinese language and understand Chinese culture, a platform for cultural exchanges between China and Indonesia, and a bridge and bond of friendly cooperation, enjoying Indonesian authorities’ acknowledgement and the residents’ welcome.

In November 2010, PBMUAZ, which was located in Indonesia’s capital Djakarta, was firstly established. In 2011, the Confucius Institutes in five universities, including Maranatha Christian University, Hasanuddin University, State University of Malang, State University of Surabaya, and Tanjungpura University, were successively set up. Last month, the Confucius Institute at the University Sebelas Maret, the seventh Confucius Institute in Indonesia, was established.

According to Xiao Xiangzhong, Chinese Director of PBMUAZ, besides such functions and conventional programs as Chinese language teaching, training Chinese language teachers, carrying out Chinese language examinations and authentication of qualifications for Chinese language teachers, providing information consultation services related to Chinese education, culture, economy and society and conducting contemporary Chinese studies, all Confucius Institutes in Indonesia, based on the regional features, try hard to innovate “voluntary routines” to allow the educational and cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and Indonesia to deliver wonderful and practical results.

On September 27th, 2018, the University of Al Azhar, which was located in Djakarta, held “Confucius Institute Open Day”. The wonderful activities attracted nearly 300 teachers and students from the University of Al Azhar, the University of Indonesia, State University of Jakarta, Xinya College of Tarumanagara University, London School of Public Relations, the University of Darma Persada and other universities.

As the only Confucius Institute in Djakarta, PBMUAZ has established sound cooperation with many universities and organizations in this region. Since its establishment until now, PBMUAZ has set up nearly 400 classes and provided multi-level Chinese language teaching for over 10,000 Chinese language learners in universities and secondary schools, and government officials in Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Trade and Indonesian National Police and employees of Indonesia’s international airports. It provides professional courses of Chinese language learning and sets up interest classes of Chinese calligraphy, seal cutting, paper cutting, Chinese knot, Tai Chi and music. In addition, PBMUAZ has sent nearly 200 Indonesian Chinese language teachers in secondary schools to its Chinese partner university, Fujian Normal University, for training.

Furthermore, PBMUAZ has held many characteristic activities, such as creatively implementing the “Know More about Secondary Schools” program, holding “Chinese Language +” international seminar by combining the Belt and Road Initiative, holding “Indonesia-China Film Week”, “Youth Micro-screen Silk Road Situation-Indonesian Youth Micro-film Festival”, “Charming and Splendid China” Chinese cultural week.

PBMMSU, which is located in East Java, is not only devoted to cultivating students majoring in Chinese language but also constantly strengthens the cultivation of non-Chinese majors. PBMMSU provides non-Chinese majors with cultural experience courses, language learning courses, etc., and organizes summer and winter camps every year, opening the doors for Indonesian students to know more about and further understand and fall in love with China.

Liao Guirong, Chinese Director of PBMMSU, noted that PBMMSU holds creative projects every year, including Spring Festival cultural activities, “Confucius Institute Day”, China-Indonesia friendship chorus competition, “Chinese Language Day” Chinese language competition, and “Happy Chinese” competition, widely spreading the Chinese culture in East Java.

At the ceremony of the 8th anniversary of the establishment of PBMMSU held last month, Xiao Qian, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia, presented his calligraphy writing “Promoting Chinese Culture and Deepening China-Indonesia Friendship” to extend his acknowledgement and encouragement.
