The Test Center at Confucius Institute at San Francisco State University (SF State) hosted the internet-based HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test), HSKK (Chinese Oral Proficiency Test) and YCT (Youth Chinese Test) on March 23rd, 2019. 61 participants from Northern California took the tests at the center.

Among the test takers, 17 registered for HSK levels 2, 4, 6 and 4 takers registered for YCT in the morning, while 33 test takers took HSK levels 1, 3, 5 and 7 students took HSKK in the afternoon. Due to the large amount of test takers, the Test Center at CI at SF State opened two computer labs.

The test takers from different language and cultural backgrounds took the HSK tests seriously. Giyeon Hwang, a student from UC-Davis, and her parents and sister are from Korea. Giyeon, a native speaker of Korean learning English as her second language, are learning Chinese as her third language, taking HSK level 3 for Confucius Institute Scholarship to realize her dream to study at Beijing Normal University some day. When she started learning Chinese, she just wanted to learn a foreign language. As Chinese language has become more and more important in the world nowadays, she is very glad to learn Chinese and very happy to have made lots of amazing Chinese friends. Learning Chinese language and culture has helped her know more about China and communicate better with her Chinese friends. In her spare time, she also participates in different Chinese contests to demonstrate her achievements in Chinese learning. She’s confident in taking the Chinese proficiency test.

By taking HSK test, some Chinese learners would like to have more opportunities to learn Chinese language and culture with the Confucius Institute Scholarship; some were planning to apply for education programs at universities in China; others took the tests to assess their abilities in using the Chinese language in their daily life for different purposes. There are two American Chinese learners, Benjamin and Elijah, who have been studying Chinese by themselves for nearly ten years. No matter how busy they, they still find time to learn Chinese just for interest.

Hosting the tests is a comprehensive project which needs seamless team networking and cooperation. Before every testing event, the teachers and student assistants of the Confucius Institute will check the equipment to ensure all computers are working normally. They arrived in the Test Center earlier in the morning, enthusiastically welcoming all students, carefully guiding the test takers to log on the website, and offering help at any time during the test. At the Confucius Institute at SF State, all team members enjoy this kind of partnership and teamwork to offer Chinese Proficiency Test services to all participants from Bay Area and across Northern California. This is the way that the Confucius Institute has been serving the University and the communities.
