On the afternoon of 14th March, 2019, Mohamed Mohamed Megahed Elneni, Deputy Minister of Education and Technical Education of Egypt, visited the Confucius Institute Headquarters with his delegation and hold a discussion with Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and other staffs. The two sides exchanged views on making Chinese language a part of the curriculums of Egyptian primary and secondary schools as well as cooperation in training indigenous Chinese language teachers and vocational education.

According to Elneni, Egypt now enjoys stable politics and rapid economic development, and its cooperation with China has been strengthened by the Belt and Road Initiative. The Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) in Egypt have offered Chinese language courses in some primary and secondary schools across Egypt. The Ministry of Education and Technical Education is planning to list Chinese as the second foreign language for primary and secondary school students and choose some pilot schools to cooperate with Luban Workshop and offer Chinese language courses. As a country in a great need of Chinese language education, Egypt hopes that the Confucius Institute Headquarters can cultivate more indigenous Chinese language teachers for the Confucius Institutes in Egypt. Elneni said the Egyptian government will strengthen cooperation with the Headquarters in the future to make joint efforts to enhance mutual understanding and friendly exchanges between the two sides.

Showing much welcome to Elneni’s visit, Ma Jianfei said that as one of the first countries to cooperate with China in Chinese language teaching, Egypt is a country with the highest level of Chinese language teaching and sinology development within the Arab region. The Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) in Egypt have a large number of students and a large running scale. The Confucius Institute Headquarters is ready to cooperate with the Egyptian Ministry of Education and Technical Education and give its support to Chinese language teaching in Egyptian primary and secondary schools through many ways, including sending experts from Egypt’s Confucius Institutes and the Chinese side to the schools, with a view to deepen cooperation and exchanges in education between the two sides.

Before the discussion, Elneni and his delegation visited the Cultural Experience Center and the textbook exhibition at the Headquarters.
