In his speech, Sui Guangjun, Chair of the University Council of GDUFS, said that Hanban has entrusted GDUFS to undertake the project of the Confucius Institute at the University of Porto, which is the first Confucius Institute built by GDUFS in the EU area. It is an honor as well as a heavy responsibility. He introduced that GDUFS has built the largest number of independent Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) abroad among all universities in Guangdong, with six Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms having been established since 2006. This time, the joint establishment of the Confucius Institute by the University of Porto and GDUFS is conducive to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Portugal and developing deeper inter-school cooperation, thus jointly advancing the construction of high-level internationalization in the two universities. It will also help cultivate more high-level international talents and build an international exchanges platform for GDUFS, consequently promoting friendly exchanges in fields like education and culture between the two countries.

António Sousa Pereira, Rector of the University of Porto, introduced the university’s scientific research, teaching achievements, scientific and technological innovations and students’ internship and employment. He hoped to conduct more cooperation with GDUFS in aspects like discipline development, scientific research, exchange visits for teachers and student exchange.

During the seminar, scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the University of Porto, Hanban and GDUFS delivered their speeches respectively. Huang Qinghua, a researcher from the Institute of Modern History, CASS, pointed out that China and Portugal have a long history of trade contact and cultural exchange. Both China and Portugal are at a critical stage of development. China is deepening its reform in an all-round way and keeping being more open to the outside world. China will keep expanding the depth and breadth of pragmatic cooperation so as to create a brighter future for China-Portugal relations. Professor Yi Xingjian, Dean of School of Finance of GDUFS, indicated that a new paradigm for economic cooperation between China and Portugal should be created under the guidance of the Belt and Road Initiative. Meanwhile, we should seize the opportunity created by the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and give full play to Macao’s and Hengqin Pilot Free Trade Zone’s role as a platform and synergy. Wei Jing, a project manager of Hanban, gave a comprehensive review of the construction of Confucius Institutes in Portugal. She said that as China’s fifth Confucius Institute in Portugal, the Confucius Institute at the University of Porto is of great significance to increase exchanges and mutual learning between the two countries and promote exchanges of people between the two countries.

The construction of Confucius Institutes is one of the important strategies of GDUFS to pursue internationalization. It plays an important role in building GDUFS’s comprehensive pattern of international cooperation and exchanges in education and strengthening people-to-people exchanges between China and other countries. GDUFS will make full use of Confucius Institutes to train more outstanding talents who are familiar with host countries and build a platform for friendly exchanges among countries, so as to contribute to deepening friendship between China and other countries and building a community of shared future for mankind.
