Unveiling Ceremony of UCD Model Confucius Institute Kicks Off

On February 26th, local time, the unveiling ceremony of University College Dublin (UCD) Model Confucius Institute was held at the Confucius Institute at UCD. Tian Xuejun, Vice Minister with Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, Yue Xiaoyong, Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, and Andrew J Deeks, President of UCD attended the ceremony.

In his speech, Tian Xuejun stated that the Confucius Institute at UCD is one of the earliest established Confucius Institutes around the globe, as well as one of the world’s first Model Confucius Institute. Ireland is now home to two Confucius Institutes which are popular among students and local residents and playing a distinctive role in advancing better China-Ireland relationship.

Tian Xuejun added that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of China-Ireland diplomatic relations. As an important part of our bilateral relations, China-Ireland educational exchanges and cooperation are thriving in recent years, not only cultivating talents for bilateral investment and cooperation in economy and trade, but also making active contributions to forming favorable social and public supports for China-Ireland relationship.

Established in September, 2006, the Confucius Institute at UCD now has nearly 50 faculty members, and has over 6000 students registered in 2018. At present, it has 9 Confucius Classrooms and co-established courses of Chinese language and culture with more than 50 middle schools in Ireland.
