Exhibition on Intangible Cultural Heritage of China’s Tianjin City Held in Confucius Institute at University of Lisbon

An exhibition on intangible cultural heritage of China’s Tianjin City and a Chinese New Year celebration event was held in the Confucius Institute at the University of Lisbon on the evening of February 13th.

At the event, folk artists from Tianjin City showcased to the Portuguese people the intangible cultural heritage in Tianjin such as dough-molding, Mao Hou (a tiny monkey shaped toy made with plants and cicada shells) making, gourd making, Clay Figure Zhang and Yangliuqing Paper Cut. The audience stopped at each booth to watch and interacted with the artists, showing a strong interest in traditional Chinese folk art.

Tianjin Municipal Government presented a painted sculpture of Confucius made by Tianjin Clay Figure Zhang Studio to the Confucius Institute at the University of Lisbon.

Paula Silva, Representative of Portuguese Minister of Culture, said in her speech that the event marked a fruitful cultural exchange between China and Portugal and would promote the understanding and exchange of intangible cultural heritage between the two countries.

Cai Run, Chinese Ambassador to Portugal, expressed that the exhibition enables more Portuguese people to gain a better understanding of traditional Chinese culture. Also, such exhibition further promotes exchanges and cooperation between China and Portugal in the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage, and deepens cultural exchanges between the two countries, thus enabling China-Portugal friendship to take deeper root in the hearts of the two peoples, and making contributions to the development of bilateral relations.

Portuguese students from the Confucius Institute at the University of Lisbon also presented with the University’s Chinese students such performances as Taichi, allegro and Peking opera, celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year together.
