Confucius Institute at San Francisco State University Successfully Holds the 2019 Chinese New Year Celebration:Pingtan

On January 26th, 2019, the Confucius Institute at San Francisco State University (CI at SFSU), in association with North California Association of Zhejiang, hosted “Shanghai Pingtan Performance” as the first event in celebrating 2019 Chinese New Year. The performance was presented by Shanghai Pingtan Troupe, the first theatre troupe in the national system of Chinese Pingtan, a heritage Chinese art performing style and narrative singing and storytelling show.

The co-hosts, Confucius Institute and North California Association of Zhejiang delivered exciting welcome remarks to officially introduce Shanghai Pingtan Troupe to the audience; the representative from Chinese Consulate in San Francisco highly praised the guest artists from Shanghai for their action in promoting people-to-people exchange and understanding.

At SF State auditorium, nearly 130 audiences from San Francisco Day Area joined the Confucius Institute for this very first time Shanghai Pingtan show in the U.S.A., kicking off the performance in celebrating the Year of Pig, a golden opportunity for SF State faculty, staff, students and community friends to appreciate heart-touched music and communicate with the performers in their stories.

The play "Beautiful Scenery of the Yangtze River near Suzhou"

The performance was hosted by Wu Xinbo and Zhu Lin. The first performance was the play "Beautiful Scenery of the Yangtze River near Suzhou". As soon as the four actresses began playing and singing, the sweet voice was like oriole singing,with all the audiences attracted. The audience who came from Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces felt familiar hometown music and arts, while people from other provinces and cultural background appreciated the romantic stories according to the bilingual subtitles. Afterwards, the troupe brought Tanci Aria Wang Zhaojun Arrives at Yanmen Pass, Yang Guifei Laments Her Loneliness in the Palace, and Shivering Bells from the Sword Tower and so on. They sang while playing the Sanxian and Pipa,expressing their feelings and sharing their stories intimately with the audience.

As a comprehensive Confucius Institute, the CI at SFSU offers a variety of Chinese courses, teacher’s training, arts and culture events for teachers and multilingual students of SFSU as well as diverse language learners in Northern California. The performance of Pingtan fully demonstrates the gorgeous and profound beauty of Chinese traditional art. It is Confucius Institute’s mission to network with internal and external partners in promoting Chinese language and culture. Shanghai Pingtan Troupe

Pingtan is a combination of two styles of Pinghua and Tanci. It is popular Jiangnan area and performs in Suzhou dialect. In 2006, it was listed in the first national intangible cultural heritage list. The performing artists from Shanghai Pingtan Troupe performed nine pieces of their traditional programs, which gained enthusiastic cheers and applause from the audience.
