Thousands of Volunteer Chinese Teachers in Thailand Celebrate Spring Festival

On January 27th, the 2019 Spring Festival Celebration and the Award Ceremony of the Teaching Skills Competition for Volunteer Chinese Teachers in and around Bangkok, sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), was held in Bangkok. Over 400 people including Duriya Amatavivat, Inspector-General of the Office of Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education of Thailand, Amporn Pinasa, Assistant Secretary-General of the Office of the Basic Education Commission, Vichit Lolurlert, Chairman of Chinese Teachers (Thailand) Association, Sukanlaya Anuchitpailin, Commissioner of the Office of the Education Council, Wanna Lorluelert, Chairman of Thai Alumni Association of China’s Universities, Yang Xin, Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, as well as officers of embassies, directors of Confucius Institutes, directors of Confucius Classrooms, representatives of international students and volunteer Chinese teachers gathered together for the joyful celebration of the Spring Festival.

Yang Xin delivered opening remarks. He said that the booming achievement of Chinese language education in Thailand cannot be made without the strong support from the Thai royal family and the Thai government, and the sincere cooperation between China and Thailand. In the coming year, Yang Xin hoped that people from all walks of life work together to promote cultural exchanges and strengthen people-to-people bonds between the two countries, with a view to jointly create a splendid future.

Wang Huichang, from the Hanban Representative Office in Thailand, stated that over the years, the Thai royal family and the Thai government have actively encouraged all types of educational institutions at all levels to carry out Chinese language teaching, achieving remarkable results. Among the Confucius Institutes in Thailand, distinctive school-running models have taken shape by adjusting measures to local conditions and giving full play to respective advantages. Volunteer teachers sowed the seeds and watered the flowers of the friendship between China and Thailand with their knowledge and wisdom. In the end, Wang Huichang gave New Year blessings to the guests and volunteer teachers present.

After more than 30 days of reviewing and discussion by over 10 Chinese and Thai experts, the awards of the 2018-2019 Academic Year Teaching Skills Competition co-hosted by the Hanban Representative Office in Thailand and Chinese Teachers (Thailand) Association, were announced. Chinese Teachers (Thailand) Association provided prize to winners. Qu Jun, a teacher at Guang Hua School Muang Rayong was crowned champion out of more than 100 contestants. The second prize went to Chen Meifang, Wu Chunyan and Wangyao. The third prize went to six volunteer teachers including Wen Xu and Zheng Shuzhen.

The theme of this Spring Festival Celebration fell into four parts, namely “My Motherland and I”, “The Belt and Road Initiative in Thailand”, “Treasures of Chinese Culture”, and “Song of Young Volunteers”. “Hundred Family Surnames” performed by students from the Confucius Classroom at Sawang Boriboon Wittaya School was a lovely show. The Peking opera show “Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy” performed by volunteer teachers from the Confucius Classroom at Chltralada School left the audience a deep impression. The Literati Gathering show named “The Melody of Wu Qin” that integrated elements of Chinese zither, calligraphy and Tai Chi performed by volunteer teachers from Maritime Silk Road Confucius Institute presented audience a wonderful performance. The scene play “Being a Newcomer in Thailand” presented funny and touching stories of volunteer Chinese teachers in Thailand. There were original shows close to life and also classic singing highlighting the theme of the celebration, sublimating the idea of Jeen Thai Phee Nong Gan (China and Thailand are as close as family members). In the end, with the audience singing “My Motherland and I” together, the 2019 Spring Festival Celebration and the Award Ceremony of the Teaching Skills Competition for Volunteer Chinese Teachers in and around Bangkok dropped the curtain successfully.

The Spring Festival Celebration is an indispensable event of the Volunteer Chinese Teacher Program in Thailand. To date, it has been held for over ten consecutive sessions. During every Spring Festival, volunteer teachers celebrate the arrival of the Lunar New Year by artistic performance, playing games, eating dumplings and so on. Thousands of volunteer Chinese teachers in Thailand gathered in seven provinces of Thailand including Bangkok, Suphan Buri, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani, Phuket and Hat Yai to celebrate the Spring Festival, among which the one in Bangkok was the largest-ever celebration attracting the most participants. The successful Spring Festival activities fully demonstrated the spirit of the volunteer teachers who stayed true to their mission and strove for progress. A new era presents new looks while a new starting point heralds a new achievement. The Volunteer Chinese Teacher Program in Thailand will continue to forge ahead in 2019.
