7th National Forum on Nurturing Talents of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages Held in Fujian

From December 15th to 16th, 2018, the 7th National Forum on Nurturing Talents of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and the Seminar on the Training of Professional Master was held at Fujian Normal University. The forum, themed with "Nurturing Talents of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in the New Era", was co-organized by Beijing Normal University, East China Normal University, and Fujian Normal University with the participation of 180 experts and scholars from 42 colleges and universities.

Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director-General of Hanban, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. He pointed out in his speech that the Forum is very timely and necessary since it is an important conference to implement the spirit of the national education conference and the Confucius Institute Conference. The Master Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) grows together with the Confucius Institute. The MTCSOL has pushed for the reform of the mode of talent training in an in-depth way and has cultivated a large number of teachers for the construction of the Confucius Institute and the development of teaching Chinese in the world. However, the faculty of the Confucius Institute is now facing multiple issues such as a lack in teachers, both in terms of quantity and quality, unsatisfactory localization, and the need to improve personnel training system. In face of these problems, it is imperative for us to adopt a problem-oriented strategy, make construction of the faculty team and personnel training a priority of the Confucius Institute, and carry out reforms and innovative with a pioneering spirit. Therefore, we shall, firstly, build a team of full-time backbone teachers to nurture highly-competent talents. We should build, at the high starting point and with high standard, a team of full-time and backbone teachers that are determined, dedicated, professional, and of high quality. The team shall be nationally funded, categorised as government institutions staffing and governed by Confucius Institute Headquarters. Secondly, we should perfect the professional personnel training system and cultivate application-oriented talent. We should complete the system of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages covering bachelor, master, and doctor education, expand the enrolment of professional doctorate, revise training schemes and courses of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, and encourage more academic researches and more Masters of Chinese to have intern overseas. Thirdly, we should accelerate the localization of teachers and staff and cultivate local talents. The Confucius Institute Scholarship should be used mainly on the nurturing local teachers, support the establishment of Chinese-teaching major in all countries, and promote Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages with more efforts. The transformation and upgrade of Confucius Institute call for sound ideas, mechanism, and consistent innovation. Thus it's important for China's colleges and universities to go hand in hand with Confucius Institute Headquarters to cultivate internationalized talents with a global version, and a good knowledge of international rules, foreign languages, and inter-cultural communication and accelerate the specialized, professional, and standard development of teachers and staff so as to promote the sound and sustainable development of the Confucius Institute.

At the seminar, Wang Changping, President of Fujian Normal University, delivered a welcome speech, and Zhong Yinghua, Vice-President of Tianjin Normal University, Zhang Jianmin, Professor of East China Normal University, Wu Yinghui, Professor of Minzu University of China, as well as Li Quan, a professor of Renmin University of China, made academic reports. Besides, scholars at the forum made in-depth exchanges concerning the curriculum design of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, the talent training mode and schemes of doctorate of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, the curriculum development and construction of internet+, the teaching mode, the teaching approaches, the teaching evaluation, the research and development of textbooks, inter-cultural communication and adaptation of teachers teaching Chinese in other countries, the establishment of case bank and resource sharing, and the nurturing and training of talents of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.
