On December 2nd, 2018. Testing Center for Chinese Proficiency Tests at Confucius Institute at San Francisco State University (CI at SFSU) hosted the 4th internet-based HSK (Chinese proficiency test), HSKK (Chinese Speaking Test)/ YCT (Youth Chinese Test) in 2018. 52 students from Northern California took all levels of the tests.

Taking HSK 2, 4, 6 and YCT Tests

HSK levels 2, 4, 6 and YCT levels 1-4 were conducted in the morning. The YCT test takers this time were three 1st-5th graders, a 6-year-old girl and her 10-year-old brother, and another 12-year-old girl. The 12-year-old girl taking YCT level 1 has learned Chinese for four and half years. As there is no Chinese courses available at her school, she learns Chinese through tutoring classes, two hours a week. Her elder brother, who has learned Chinese for ten years, took HSK level 2 on the same day. Their parents encouraged them to learn Chinese for their future career needs for multilingual proficiency in diverse world, important challenge they will face in their life. Though the little girl said "I learn Chinese because my parents want it", she showed a really sweet smile after she got her good grade and said “I'm satisfied”.

Another two YCT test takers were a brother and a sister. The examiners specially arranged testing stations closed to each other and instructed them to log on to the test website, providing help as needed. The siblings, though young, were very confident and finished the tests smoothly. Their mother is Chinese and father is Singaporeans. When talking about the reason to learn Chinese, the mother said, "It's important to remember Chinese treasure of language and culture". They hoped their kids could be able to participate in summer camp or exchanges programs in China. It's obvious that the family enjoy learning Chinese and put much time and efforts in their Chinese education.

HSK levels 1, 3, 5 and HSKK (primary, intermediate and advanced levels) were arranged in the afternoon. By taking HSK tests, some of the participants would like to apply for the Confucius Institute Scholarship to learn Chinese language and culture in China.
