China-EU Dialogue on Economic Development Along River Rhine——Lecture Tour of 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening-Up in Europe Concludes in Confucius Institute at University of Basel

On November 20th, local time, the lecture tour of the “40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening-Up” in Europe concluded in the Confucius Institute at University of Basel, Switzerland. Dr. Hans Jakob Roth, Board President of the Confucius Institute at University of Basel, and Chi Fulin, Dean of the China Institute for Reform and Development (CIRD) (Hainan), met in the old campus of the University of Basel along the Rhine. They discussed the economic development and achievements between China and the EU and looked forward to the opportunities and prospects for China-EU economic cooperation with representatives of Basel Chamber of Commerce and enterprises, faculty and students of the University of Basel and local people who pay close attention to China-EU economic cooperation.

Chi Fulin, with the theme of “China in Comprehensively Deepening Reform and Opening-up and China-EU Cooperation”, introduced the potential, opportunities and space of China-EU cooperation to the audiences from the perspective of the trend of China’s economic development and reform and opening-up. As China is entering the later stage of industrialization, the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry will provide new opportunities for China-EU cooperation; China is entering a new era of consumption with tremendous potential in domestic demand being released, creating huge market space for the development of China-EU service trade; Facing new changes in economic globalization, China is entering a new stage of opening up, which requires China and EU to advance cooperation in free trade.

After then, Dr. Hans Jakob Roth gave a speech on “Economic and Cultural Background in Trade Disputes”. Living in China for 10 years, he has witnessed China’s opening up. He introduced China’s great changes and the differences between Chinese and western cultures based on his personal experiences and unique perspective as a diplomat for many years. He expounded on the importance of the integration of eastern and western cultures in China-EU cooperation from different aspects such as the world background, the course of history, the economic status quo and the challenges facing Asia.
