Over Five Thousand People Take YCT in Confucius Institute at Khon Kaen University

On November 17th, the Confucius Institute at Khon Kaen University witnessed the largest YCT (Youth Chinese Test) of the year taken by 5133 examinees in total. It is the second time that the Confucius Institute organized YCT on such a large scale since last November.

The examination was held at 17 test centers under the Confucius Institute at the same time. The youngest candidates were a group of kindergarten children with an average age under five years old from Chumphon Dejiao Qinghua School. The school offers Chinese language courses for all grades from kindergarten to middle school. It is the second year that the school organizes senior kindergarten children to take the examination.

In the largest test center, Li Yue Gan School in Khon Kaen, 1220 candidates, braving the scorching heat, were answering questions in the half-open examination room in good order. The school was the first in Khon Kaen to offer Chinese language course on the largest scale with more than 2000 students learning Chinese. Over 1000 candidates take the YCT per year since last year when the school signed the agreement of establishing a test center of YCT with the Confucius Institute. Besides, around 100 students registered for the YCT of a higher level this year.

Hong Shaolan, Head of Chinese language teaching of the School, suggested that, it was after she joined the local teacher training group of the Confucius Institute to study at the Southwest University of China for a month that she came up with the idea to study Chinese well and become a Chinese teacher. She never expected that with the development of Confucius Institutes, Chinese language teaching could thrive and bloom at her home. She was very excited and proud seeing her school organized the YCT at such a large scale and the packed examination room.

As the most famous public primary school in Khon Kaen, The primary school affiliated with Khon Kaen University serves as one of the first teaching sites of the Confucius Institute. 579 students from Grade 3 to Grade 6 took the YCT. In order to motivate and inspire the students to study Chinese and take the YCT, the Confucius Institute organized the YCT Chinese camp with the school. Rich and colorful Chinese cultural experience activities excited the students, such as painting plum blossom with ink, seeking the right puzzle piece while listening to Chinese, doing five-animal exercises, and singing Chinese songs. Speaking highly of the YCT and YCT Chinese Camp, Ah Li, Vice President of the school, praised the activity as annual linguistic and cultural event of the school, helping students set clearer goals and generate keen interest.

The Confucius Institute has been diversifying teaching methods and embracing more students at a younger age over the past 12 years in the northeastern Thailand. The substantial growth of the number of students in kindergartens, primary schools and middle schools fully shows that the increasingly important role of the Chinese language teaching in Thailand. The mounting number of YCT candidates reflects the high attention paid by Thai primary and secondary schools to promoting the teaching quality of Chinese and introducing test standard of YCT.
