“Belt and Road Initiative” Chinese Art Tour: Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University Successfully Holds Chinese Art Gala

On October 30th, the “Belt and Road Initiative” Chinese art tour at Chulalongkorn University, sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and co-organized by the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University and Shandong Normal University, was successfully held in the auditorium of Chulalongkorn University. Banthit Eua-arporn, President of Chulalongkorn University, Chadarat Singhadechakul, Assistant Secretary General of the Higher Education Commission of Thailand, Phomthorn Malakul Na Ayudhaya, Vice President of Chulalongkorn University, Kinggan, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University, Yang Xin, Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, Xing Guang, Vice President of Shandong Normal University, Fu Zengyou, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Over 1,800 primary and secondary school students and teachers, teachers of the Confucius Institute, Chinese students and businessmen in Bangkok attended the show.

Yang Xin said that this year marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up. As China’s economy advances, China and Thailand have achieved full development in cooperation and frequent cultural exchanges. Since its establishment, the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University has fully played its role as a platform for comprehensive cultural exchanges and made great contributions to China-Thailand friendship and cultural exchanges between the two countries. This art tour presented the traditional Chinese culture and a modern China through music, songs and dance. It also invited teachers and students of Chulalongkorn University, some primary schools, middle schools and colleges in Bangkok, and Chinese students in Thailand to enjoy this cultural feast which is beneficial for Thai students to learn Chinese culture and to learn Chinese better.

Banthit said in his speech that it is essential to learn Chinese culture in language study. In order to enhance Thai students’ understanding of Chinese culture and promote cultural exchanges between Thailand and China, Chulalongkorn University would continue to support the Confucius Institute and organize Chinese cultural activities for the development of the discipline of Chinese at Chulalongkorn University.

Phomthorn stated that the performance tour integrated Chinese songs, dance, instrumental music and martial arts, bringing audience an audio-visual feast. He also hoped that everyone could enhance their understandings of China and Chinese culture and art while enjoying the marvelous show.

Xing Guang noted in his speech that under the background of the Belt and Road Initiative in China and the construction of the “Eastern Economic Corridor” in Thailand, the tour of the Shandong Normal University art troupe would strengthen the cultural exchanges between teachers and students of the two schools and would deepen the friendship between the people of both countries through the arrangements by the Confucius Institute Headquarters.

There were 26 performers from Shandong Normal University in this art tour. With the support of the profound culture and comprehensive advantages of disciplines of arts and physical education at Shandong Normal University, the art troupe has visited many places in Europe, America and Asia, and has frequently performed in many major occasions at home and abroad. The authentic Chinese Kung Fu, beautiful folk music, exquisite dance skills, various artistic forms, and the unique artistic charm, made them shine in the performance.

Audiences were treated to beautiful landscape of a water town in Southern China in a melodious bamboo flute "Journey to Gusu". After then, the dancers in delicate clothes moving with graceful bearing presented “The Sound of Porcelain and Jade”, which was followed by the cheerful ensemble “Pleasures”, a fusion of pipa and bamboo flute and other traditional musical instruments, wafting across the auditorium. The sports dance "Beijing Opera Life" brought the atmosphere to a climax.

The Chinese art tour at the Confucius Institute is an important China-Thailand cultural exchange event held in the Thai capital under the background of the Belt and Road Initiative. It plays a positive role in promoting the cultural exchanges between the two countries. The Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University will continue to organize such events in the future and contribute to the sound cultural exchanges between China and Thailand.
