Presentation for Chinese Language as an Elective Course Held in Faculty of Philology in the University of Banja Luka

On October 19th, 2018, the presentation for Chinese Language as an elective course was held in the Faculty of Philology, University of Banja Luka. 25 freshmen together with staff members of the Confucius Institute at University of Banja Luka attended the activities in No.8 classroom.

As this is the first time that Chinese language was approved to be taken an elective course in the University of Banja Luka, professor Gao Yang gave a short speech to help students have some idea about how difficult it is to learn Chinese language and the benefits of learning Chinese and some experience of learning Chinese.

To help the students gain confidence in learning Chinese language, professor Gao took homophonic words, such as “mā mɑ” “bà bɑ” “ kāfēi” etc to show them that it was not so hard to speak Chinese. The students also had a try of pronouncing four tones in Chinese language.


Concerning to the most difficult part in learning Chinese language- writing Chinese characters, Professor Gao explained with the inscriptions carved on tortoise shell that Chinese characters were evolved from graphic images and illustrated with the characters“人(person)”“大(big)”“日(sun)”“月(moon)”.

Professor Gao also explained that the Chinese language lectures would be interesting with games and cultural activities.

At the end, Professor Gao gave a brief introduction on the importance of learning Chinese. She explained that Learning Chinese would help them to win scholarships, attend camps, attend Chinese Bridge Competition, etc.
