2018 Second In-Service Training Workshop for Confucius Institute Foreign Directors Concludes

On October 21st, the 2018 Second In-service Training Workshop for Confucius Institute Foreign Directors, sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and organized by Xiamen University, was successfully concluded in Xiamen. Jing Wei, Deputy Director-General of Hanban and Deputy Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters, Yang Bin, Vice President of Xiamen University, and the representatives of lecturers attended the closing ceremony.

As the representatives of workshop attendees, Traci Lynn Robbins, Director of the Confucius Institute at Davis School District in the United States, and Katja Margit Yang, Director of the Bonn Confucius Institute in Germany, delivered speeches. The two directors summarized the seminars themed “Confucius Institutes’ Positioning and Characteristic Development”, and “The Construction of Confucius Institutes’ Core Values and Quality and Efficiency Improvement”, shared the results of their group discussions, and expressed to Hanban and Xiamen University their heartfelt gratitude for the meticulous preparation and thoughtful arrangements for the training. They both agreed that all the attendees have reaped a lot of benefits from various lectures and experiences at the workshop, and the in-depth exchanges and discussions there have brought about many new ideas for developing Confucius Institutes.

In her speech, Jing Wei pointed out that directors are the core of management of Confucius Institutes, an essential part of Chinese language promotion, as well as a bridge between Confucius Institutes and host universities. Only when directors play their parts can Confucius Institutes develop in a healthy and ordered way.

She emphasized that since the development of Confucius Institutes will be increasingly diversified, it is necessary to respect the diversification of local demands in areas where Confucius Institutes sit, and promote the brand projects of Confucius Institutes based on the local needs, so as to enhance the characteristic development of Confucius Institutes. Meanwhile, it is also important to respect the diversity of Chinese and foreign directors, strengthen mutual trust, be considerate, and enhance communication.

She said that the Confucius Institute is a Chinese-foreign cooperative educational institution and project featuring transparency, openness and mutual benefits. Directors should be adept at establishing good communication channels with media, so as to present our teaching and cultural activities to the public in an objective and vivid manner, and also good at telling stories about teachers and students of Confucius Institutes through new media.
