On the evening of October 21st, the final contest and closing ceremony of the 11th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students was held in Kunming. The competition, under the theme of “Learn Chinese, Double Your World”, was co-hosted by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and People’s Government of Yunnan Province, and organized by Yunnan Provincial Education Department, Yunnan Normal University, and Yunnan Radio and Television Station. Of all the contestants from 110 divisions of 99 countries around the world, “Top Five” groups remained after the overseas preliminaries, three rounds of “crossing bridge” competition in China, and promotion race within five continents. In the final, contestants fully showed their talents through the fierce competitions for talent shows, impromptu Q&A, and Chinese speeches. The team from North Korea won the championship.

Present at the closing ceremony were Chen Shun, Vice Governor of Yunnan Province, Xu Bin, Vice President of the CPPCC of Yunnan Province, Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director-General of Hanban, He Ligui, Under-Secretary-General of People's Government of Yunnan Province, Zhou Rong, Director-General of Yunnan Provincial Education Department, Rao Wei, Chair of the University Council of Yunnan Normal University, Jiang Yongwen, President of Yunnan Normal University, He Yaning, Director of Yunnan Radio and Television Station, Liu Shaoan, Vice President of Yunnan CPPCC of Kunming City, and other guests. Judges for the competition were Xu Li, famous announcer of China Central Television, Zhang Mingzhou, chairman of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) and Vice President of the Chamber of Chinese Society for the Studies of Children’s Literature, and Osman, Foreign Director of Confucius Institute at University of Khartoum, Sudan.

Before the final competition, the contestants from different countries in special costumes performed the opening dance Happy Chinese under the flags of Chinese Bridge. Five champion teams representing their continents performed one by one. These special performances impressed the audience.

In the first round of the talent show, the contestants of the five intercontinental champion teams showed their talents in learning the Chinese language and culture through allegro, singing, dancing, reciting, etc. These youngsters from different countries also performed Happy Chinese Bridge, expressing their common passion for Chinese culture.

On the screen was played a video about an American contestant, Knight, telling the audience the story of his family. The family adopted a little Chinese boy who could not speak English. Therefore, Knight, as the elder brother, became an interpreter between the boy and the adoptive family. From then on, Knight made a strong resolution to learn Chinese well, so as to travel in China along with his Chinese brother.

The second round was talent and knowledge contest. It consisted of two sections: quick response questions and risk questions. All the contestants put their best foot forward. After two rounds of fierce competition, three teams-one from North Korea, another form Bulgaria, and another from the US-were qualified for the next round.

The third round was a two-minute speech with the theme “Learn Chinese, Double Your World”. In this round, the American team expressed their wishes for a better development of China-US friendship and their sincere thanks for their partners and all the backstage crews. The North Korean team, centering upon the symbolic meaning of the Chinese knot, described how the Chinese language closely linked them with the whole world. The Bulgarian team presented from a unique perspective their experience in visiting Beijing, Harbin, the Shaolin Temple, etc. In the end, after three fierce rounds, the North Korean team won the championship.

All the contestants from different countries, together with those helpful Chinese volunteers, sang “The Same Song”. During their singing, distinguished guests honored the winners. Chen Shun, Vice Governor of Yunnan Province, Xu Bin, Vice President of the CPPCC of Yunnan Province, and Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director-General of Hanban, awarded the champion team. Finally, the competition ended with the singing and dancing of “Please Stay, Guests from Afar”.

In the competition, all the contestants showed their Chinese language proficiency and their thorough understanding of Chinese culture. The multiple cultures of the world were well mingled with the Chinese civilization and were harmoniously presented on the same stage.
