Unveiling Ceremony of Wuhan-Borlange Friendship City Confucius Institute Held

At 18:00 p.m. local time on September 26th, Sweden, the unveiling ceremony of “Wuhan-Borlange Friendship City Confucius Institute” was held in Borlange, Sweden. Gui Congyou, Chinese Ambassador to Sweden, Chen Ruifeng, Deputy Secretary of the Wuhan Municipal Party Committee & Executive Vice Mayor, Mari Jonsson, Executive Vice Mayor of Borlange, and Mao Hui, Vice President of Jianghan University, a Chinese cooperative unit, attended a series of activities. The ceremony was co-presided over by Jorg Bassek, the foreign director of Confucius institute and Tu Qian, the Chinese director of Confucius institute.

Vice mayor, Mari Jonsson first delivered a speech. She said that Confucius Institution, as an educational institution, can provide language and cultural courses for citizens and organize various activities to enrich their cultural life. The Confucius Institute is named after the friendship city because it is rooted in the good cooperation foundation of the two cities. With the increasing interaction between the two cities, more and more people in Borlange are interested in China. Confucius Institute is set up to meet the needs of citizens to learn Chinese, understand Chinese culture and strengthen business and trade with China. She believes that the Confucius Institute will further strengthen exchanges between the two cities and contribute to the cooperation and friendship between the two cities. She hoped that the Confucius Institute would contribute to strengthening the understanding and friendship between the Chinese and Swedes, and at the same time become a diversified center where citizens of different ethnic backgrounds can learn from each other and build trust. Finally, Mari Jonsson thanked the Wuhan Municipal Government and Jianghan University for their hard work and efforts in building Confucius Institution. She wished Confucius Institution a bright future.

For physical reasons, the mayor of the city, Mr. Yang Boman, was unable to attend the unveiling ceremony, but he wrote a letter of congratulations for the unveiling ceremony. He said that the opening ceremony was a great event with significance. He hoped that the Confucius Institution would succeed with the support and concern of all parties and benefit the citizens of the two cities. Mayor Yang Boman said that he would do his utmost to support the development of Confucius Institute, and wished the Wuhan-Borlange Friendship City Confucius Institute good luck!

Mr. Chen Ruifeng delivered a speech afterwards. He expressed his sincere thanks to the Borlange Municipal Government, the Chinese Embassy in Sweden, the National Han Office (the headquarters of the Confucius Institute) and the people of the two cities for their great concern and strong support for the construction of the Confucius Institute. The Wuhan Municipal Government is willing to work with the Borlange Municipal Government to fully support and accelerate the work of the Confucius Institute and to deliver positive message to the world.

Chinese Ambassador to Sweden Gui Congyou made a special trip to the opening ceremony and jointly unveiled the Confucius Institute with Mari Jonsson, Chen Ruifeng, Mao Hui, the Chinese director and the foreign director of the Confucius Institute. Ambassador Gui believes that the establishment of the Confucius Institute of Wuhan-Borlange Friendship City will build a bridge for the people of the two countries to learn each other's languages and cultures, enhance understanding and trust, and promote communication. It will strengthen cooperation in various fields between Wuhan and Borlange Friendship City and will also play a positive role in promoting friendly relations between China and Sweden.

After the opening ceremony, the Sino-Swedish joint performance was held. Teachers from School of Music, School of Fine Arts of Jianghan University, students from the school of Medicine of Jianghan Univeristy and the Swedish traditional dance team, musical troupe jointly presented an art feast to audience, including Guzheng solo, Chinese folk dance, Kung Fu Taiji show, Qipao show, Swedish traditional dance, opera performance, classical songs and other programs. At the subsequent reception dinner, the Chinese teacher of the Confucius Institute offered a short course focusing on some Chinese expressions most frequently used in daily life.

As the first Confucius Institute named after friendship city in the world, Wuhan-Borlange Friendship City Confucius Institute was officially established in April 2018. Its establishment will become a good platform for Swedish people to learn Chinese and traditional Chinese medicine.
