Confucius Institute Established in Antigua and Barbuda

On the morning of Oct 8th, Michael Brown, Minister of Education of Antigua and Barbuda, together with his delegation, visited the Confucius Institute Headquarters, had talks with Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and signed the Agreement on the Joint Establishment of the Confucius Institute in Antigua and Barbuda. Eugenie Westenee Matthew, Representative from Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education, Jemo Rayne, the official of the Education Ministry, Hong Gang, President of Zhejiang International Studies University, and others witnessed the signing ceremony.

Located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, Antigua and Barbuda consists of three islands: Antigua, Barbuda and Redonda, covering an area of 442 square kilometers. English is its official language. It has a population of 94, 000. Saint John is its capital. In 1983, it established diplomatic relations with China.

The Confucius Institute in Antigua and Barbuda is the first Confucius Institute in the country. Its Chinese partner is Zhejiang International Studies University. This Confucius Institute will actively carry out the Chinese language teaching and strive to provide vocational education training for youth based on actual local needs. It will play a positive role in expanding educational and cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries and enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.
