5th Confucius Institute Headquarters “Open Day” Held

Themed “Partners Hand in Hand”, the 5th Confucius Institute Headquarters Open Day was held on September 28. About 400 people were present at the event, including envoys to China and representatives of cultural institutions from 15 countries, representatives from over 20 Chinese partner institutions, representatives from China International Development Cooperation Agency, representatives from enterprises supporting the construction of Confucius Institutes, media, Beijing Municipal Education Commission, Xicheng District, prize winners in previous “Chinese Bridge” competitions and winners of Confucius Institute Scholarships, and doctoral students under Confucius China Studies Program.

At the opening ceremony, prize winners in previous “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign Secondary School Students performed the fascinating “traditional Chinese talent show mix”, demonstrating their love of Chinese culture through Peking Opera, dance, poetry recitation, calligraphy and other forms.

Darko Pajović, Montenegrin Ambassador to China, Xie Rongbin, Deputy Editor-in-chief of Global Times, and Liu Song, Vice President of Alibaba Group, delivered their speech respectively. A media forum themed “International Expression of China’s Image” was held on the Open Day. Representatives from Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies, People’s Daily Overseas Edition, Global Times, Takungpao, China Global Television Network (CGTN), Netease Media, Douyin and other research institutions and media had a discussion on the international expression of China’s image and the way for Confucius Institutes to establish public image and offered their advice and suggestions.

At the enterprise symposium themed “Win-win Cooperation in Belt and Road Initiative”, representatives from over 20 well-known enterprises, including China International Development Cooperation Agency, Alibaba Group, Phoenix Publishing & Media Inc. and IFLYTEK CO., LTD., talked about the way for Confucius Institute, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative, to join hands with Chinese enterprises to promote the economic development and cultural and people-to-people exchanges and cooperation along the Belt and Road and achieve mutual benefits and win-win results.

At the “cultural salon”, Kang Zhen, Professor in School of Chinese Language and Literature Beijing Normal University, guided the audience to read and appreciate Chinese classic poems, feeling the charm of the classic poems and understanding the literary connotations and concomitant emotions there from. Hu Biliang, Dean of Emerging Markets Institute at Beijing Normal University, discussed with doctoral students under Confucius China Studies Program on the value of adhering to globalization in today’s world and the challenges lying ahead, and elaborated the role of Confucius Institutes as a cultural institution in the process of globalization. The two lectures were broadcasted synchronously on Confucius Institute Online, enabling all students of Confucius Institutes worldwide to watch the lectures online and communicate and interact with each other.

On the occasion, the Confucius Institute Headquarters interacted through live video with 7 Confucius Institutes in Asia, Oceania, Africa and Europe, showing students’ talents, teaching situations, cultural activities and other aspects of Confucius Institutes. At the same time, a global Confucius Institute short video challenge themed “Chinese Style Vibrating the Whole World” was held on Douyin, a live streaming platform. In this challenge, teachers and students from 110 Confucius Institutes in 57 countries sang Chinese songs and performed Chinese dance and competed with other participants on this online platform.

Other warm and lively activities attracting a constant stream of participants were also held on the “Open Day”, including “Smart music class”, award-offering activity themed “Exploring HSK, Travelling in China”, Chinese volunteer photography exhibition, Chinese cultural experiencing activity and so on.


The 5th Confucius Institute Headquarters “Open Day”

The Confucius Institute Headquarters “Open Day” started in 2014 and has been held in every September annually since then. All Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms around the globe have celebrated “Confucius Institute Day” successively with various brilliant activities.

Until now, there have been 530 Confucius Institutes and 1,113 Confucius Classrooms for primary and secondary school students in 149 countries (regions), with 46,200 part-time and full-time teachers from both China and other countries and regions in the world. There have been over 9 million students at Confucius Institutes, various cultural activities held by which have involved more than 100 million participants.
