On the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the Belt and Road, we pay tribute to the Belt and Road with sets of data. Put a seal on this great initiative with the hard work of members of the Confucius Institute. Let’s see the story between the Confucius Institute and the Belt and Road through these data.

Confucius Institute Highlights 1 Global Distribution

Over the past 5 years, the global family of Confucius Institutes has embraced another 33 countries with 122 Confucius Institutes and 578 Confucius Classrooms newly established. Today, 530 Confucius Institutes and 1,113 Confucius Classrooms in primary and secondary schools have been established in 149 countries and regions.

Among 64 countries along the Belt and Road, 53 countries have established 144 Confucius Institutes and 134 Confucius Classrooms in primary and secondary schools, which is one of the fastest growing regions around the world.

Confucius Institute Highlights 2 Better Quality

We have dispatched 34,000 Chinese teachers to countries along the Belt and Road successively, and trained over 60,000 local Chinese language teachers in various countries and designed key Chinese Language textbooks in 48 languages among 51 languages. Meanwhile, we have produced 529 teaching materials, including language, culture and reference books, and donated 4,500,000 volumes (pieces) of teaching materials including books, audio and video tapes, and cultural goods.

The Confucius China Studies Program initiated in 2013 has sponsored 162 famous scholars and young sinologists in countries along the Belt and Road to study or proceed to a degree in China, and supported the Confucius Institutes along the Belt and Road in holding high-end international conferences where many dignitaries, intellectual elites and business leaders from many countries were present.

Confucius Institute Highlights 3 Improved System

The Confucius Institute helps the countries along the Belt and Road to establish a comprehensive Chinese language teaching system, from kindergartens to primary and secondary schools, from Basic Chinese to high-end translation, and business, tourism and vocational training, with a total of 2.04 million students. The building of the Belt and Road provides a large number of professional talents with occupational skills that master Chinese and understand China.

The Confucius Institute has become a bridge bring people closer to consolidate and develop friendly relations between China and countries along the routes by vigorously offering Chinese language teaching programs, and actively promoting cultural exchanges and mutual learning.

In addition to training local Chinese language talents, the Confucius Institute is actively promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and foreign countries in terms of education, economy, trade, tourism and sister provinces and states.

Confucius Institute Highlights 4 Rooted in Localization

The Confucius Institute actively implements a localization strategy and strongly supports the cultivation, training, and recruitment of local Chinese language teachers in countries along the routes of the Belt and Road.

01 The South Asian Tutor-Training Class has trained 3,070 teachers from seven South Asian countries.

02 Experts are trained in other countries. In 2017, 20 groups were sent to train 1,674 local teachers. Among them 706 people were from countries along the Belt and Road.

03 The project of the overseas Chinese teachers’ study tours in China was implemented. In 2017, 1,200 overseas Chinese teachers from 70 countries received relevant training and 531 were from countries along the routes of the Belt and Road.

04 Overseas students with a master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages have been encouraged to return to their homeland as local Chinese teachers. So far, 51 Confucius Institutes from 34 countries participated in the Belt and Road have employed 104 of them.

Confucius Institute Highlights 5 Building Bridges

Since July, 2016, a total of 13 groups were sent to 56 Confucius Institutes in 26 countries along the routes of the Belt and Road. 67 performances and lectures were held, attracting 400, 000 local participants.

Over 110, 000 youngsters participated in the preliminary rounds and finals of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students and the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students as well as the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreigners Across the Globe. Over 2,500 principals, teachers, and students from K-12 schools and colleges and education officials were invited to participate in the “Chinese Bridge” Summer or Winter Camp. This year, 760 primary, middle school, and college students from 28 Confucius Institutes in 15 Central and Eastern European countries came to China for the Summer Camp. 15 foreign diplomats in China, including the ambassador of Montenegro to China and the ambassador of Latvia to China, attended the opening ceremony.

Since the inception of the Chinese Program for Foreign Diplomats, a total of 294 foreign diplomats from countries along the routes of the Belt and Road have participated in, including the ambassadors of Poland, Slovenia, Moldova, Mongolia, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh to China.

Conclusion

“State-to-state relations thrive when there is friendship between the peoples. And such friendship grows out of close interactions between the peoples.” The language takes priority in heart-to-heart communication. Confucius Institute uses the Chinese language to promote cultural integration and heart-to-heart communication, gaining global popularity. They have not only enhanced the mutual understanding and friendship among people between China and the rest of the world but also played a unique role in the promotion of communication and mutual learning among human civilizations, making essential contributions.

In the future, Confucius Institute will continue to build bridges of mutual understanding, connectivity, and common development with the language acting as mediators and communication messengers.
