On September 18th, a two-day seminar about cooperation between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine was launched in Krakow, a city in southern Poland. TCM scholars from Poland, China and America attended the seminar.

Sponsored by the Medical College of the Jagiellonian Universityand the Confucius Institute in Krakow, this seminar aims to discuss the potential of collaborative treatment of TCM and Western medicine. Besides the scholars, this seminar also attracted nearly 100 local people including those who are interested in TCM and medical staff.

Xu Jiajie, Director of the Center for East-West Medicine and Center for Integrative Medical Cooperation in the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), introduced different views on diseases between TCM and Western medicine, Chinese acupuncture treatment, Tai Chi exercise and the current situation of integrative medical treatments in his speech.

Xu Jiajie stated that during the 20 years of his researches on the integrative medicine, he believed that TCM and Western medicine are opposed, but should complement and learn from each other. If the isolated between TCM and Western medicine can be changed in the future, mankind will benefit from it.

Zhao Jing, Associate Professor of the Research Institution of TCM Clinical Basic Medicine of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, gave an interview to Xinhua News Agency, saying that this seminar not only will promote TCM and traditional Chinese culture, but also improve the skills of medical staff and promote their communication and mutual-learning.

Zhao Jing said that nowadays TCM has received more and more attention and acceptance from the international community. China is also vigorously advancing the “going global” strategy of TCM. However, the promotion of TCM should not be rushed. We should let the public experience the curative effect of TCM first, and then promote the cooperation of medical and research agencies in order to make TCM recognized by governments.
