First Confucius Institute in Samoa Officially Inaugurated

On September 10th, local time, the Confucius Institute at the National University of Samoa held its opening ceremony. As the first Confucius Institute in Samoa, it was co-established by the National University of Samoa and the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), with Liaocheng University as its Chinese partner.

Nearly 100 representatives from all walks of life attended the ceremony, including Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell, Minister for Public Enterprises, Faaolesa Katopau Ainuu, Minister of Justice and Courts Administration, Papaliitele Niko Lee Hang, Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Fui Asofou So’o, President of the National University of Samoa, and Wang Xuefeng, Chinese Ambassador to Samoa.

Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell delivered a speech on behalf of Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi, Prime Minister of Samoa. He reiterated the Samoan government’s gratitude to the Chinese government for supporting the national development projects of Samoa, and pointed out that the establishment of Confucius Institute symbolizes the strong and profound relationship between the two countries. Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell encouraged young people in Samoa to learn Chinese language and culture, so as to enhance cultural understanding, strengthen diplomatic relations, and promote trade and business between both countries.

On behalf of the Chinese Embassy, Wang Xuefeng gave his warmest congratulations on the opening of the Confucius Institute at the National University of Samoa. He said that since China and Samoa established diplomatic relations in 1975, China-Samoa relations have developed steadily over the past 43 years, perfectly demonstrated by the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the National University of Samoa. Confucius Institutes serve as a bridge connecting different languages and civilizations, strengthening understanding and friendship between people in China and other countries. Wang Xuefeng praised the all-out efforts of Liaocheng University and the National University of Samoa in establishing the Institute, and expected it would develop into a symbol of China-Samoa friendship and cooperation.

At the opening ceremony, Song Yanting, Director of the Office of International Programs at Liaocheng University, read out the congratulatory letter from Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director-General of Hanban, and the congratulatory letter from Cai Xianjin, President of Liaocheng University.

In his congratulatory letter, Ma Jianfei expressed his warm congratulations on the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the National University of Samoa. He said that he hopes the National University of Samoa, the only national university in the country, and Liaocheng University, a well-known comprehensive university in China, to give full play to their respective advantages, cooperate sincerely and work together to consolidate the foundation of Chinese teaching, as well as carry out various cultural activities. Both sides should strive to build the Confucius Institute into a bridge connecting education, cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and Samoa, so as to contribute to enhancing understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Cai Xianjin said in his congratulatory letter that the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the National University of Samoa will provide a full range of services for local people to learn Chinese and know about Chinese culture, and effectively promote educational and cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries, thereby making it a milestone in the development of China-Samoa relations. As the Chinese partner, Liaocheng University will fully support the development of the Confucius Institute. Through the sincere cooperation and joint efforts of both sides, the Confucius Institute would become a high-quality platform for exchanges and cooperation between both universities, and emerge as a signature of China-Samoa education cooperation in the South Pacific Region, thus making positive contributions to enhancing friendship between Chinese people and Samoan people.

Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell and Wang Xuefeng cut the ribbon and unveiled the nameplate respectively during the opening ceremony. After the ceremony, the guests also visited offices and classrooms of the Institute.
