Confucius Institute at Troy University Holds Ninth Southern USA Confucius Institute Directors Conference

On August, 30th and 31st, local time, the 9th Southern USA Confucius Institute Directors Conference was held in at Troy University. 23 foreign and Chinese directors from 16 Confucius Institutes in Southern United States attended the conference. Jack Hawkins, Chancellor of Troy University, Earl Ingram and Royce Hank Dasinger, Senior Vice Chancellors and Mr. Li Qiangmin, Consul-General of the Chinese Consulate General in Houston also attended the opening ceremony.

In his address at the opening ceremony, Jack Hawkins introduced the internationalization plan and progress of Troy University and gave full credit to the important role of the Confucius Institute at Troy University in the development of the university. He also confirmed that Troy University would continue to support the work of the Confucius Institute as usual and strive to make more contributions to promoting people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the United States and China.

Later, Mr. Li Qiangmin gave a keynote speech. In his speech, he highlighted the important role of Confucius Institute in promoting people-to-people and cultural exchanges and mutual understanding and trust between China and the United States. He also praised the prominent achievements obtained by the Confucius Institutes in Southern USA in such fields as promoting the spread of the Chinese language and culture, building a cultural and educational interactiveplatform between the two countries and providing more opportunities for talents exchange and interactions. Mr. Li also expressed his expectations for these Confucius Institutes to let more USA citizens know about China and better understand China through their Chinese language and cultural courses and activities.

In the two-day seminar, directors discussed in depth such topics as the management bottlenecks, qualified Chinese teacher resources, Confucius Institutes with characteristics and influence construction based on the developments of their Confucius Institutes.

Long Jie, Counselor of Education of the Chinese Consulate-General in Houston also participated in the seminar, hearing opinions and suggestions from representatives. Long Jie said, Confucius Institutes should have confidence in their development, build an unimpeded communication system with partnership universities and enhance cooperation among Confucius Institutes so as to realize the characteristic construction and development.

In these two days, Mr. Li Qiangmin and representatives visited the Janice Hawkins Cultural Arts Park where Terracotta warrior replicas are exhibited, the Confucius Institute administration building, the International Art Center, library, sound labs, textbook compiling center and conference and teaching venues.

The Conference provided a platform for the Confucius Institutes in Southern US to fully exchange their experience, promoting their communication and corporation.
