On September 2nd, “Confucius Institute Week” in the University of Botswana rounded off in Gaborone. The one-week wonderful Chinese cultural activity attracted a host of local people.

According to Pu Durong, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana (CIUB), “Confucius Institute Week” was hosted together with Botswana Consumer Fair. The cultural activities including Chinese language open classes, calligraphy writing, painting, and display of Chinese costumes and culture attracted vast local residents and helped them understand Chinese culture.

Fascinated by the interesting 15-minute Chinese language open class, nearly 300 local people signed for the class within a week. They tried on Chinese costumes and took photos in front of the Confucius Institute display wall. “I have never thought that I could draw such a beautiful painting. I want my mom to have a look.” Thapo, a 13-year-old student, said in excitement, showing his just-finished ink blowing painting.

Part Mgadla, Botswanan Director of the CIUB, said: “I am very happy to see that lots of people have taken a keen interest in the Chinese culture. As China grows stronger, people around the world including us have forged increasingly closer connections with China. We need to learn Chinese, communicate with Chinese people, and understand China.”

CIUB has trained over 6,000 students since its opening in 2009.
