Brazil Regional Final of the 11th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students Concludes

On August 19th, the Brazil Regional Final of the 11th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students was held at the Confucius Institute at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.

In the contest, Daniel de Morais (Bo Jiahao) and Patrick dos Santos Pinheiro (Li Ziyang) from the Portuguese-Chinese bilingual school in Rio de Janeiro State won the first and second place respectively.

On that day, 9 contestants participated in the contest which included four parts, namely, written test, speech, questions and answers, and talent show. In the speech titled “My Growing Love for Flute Melody and Chinese Language”, Bo Jiaohao told a story how he fell in love with the Chinese culture after his learning of ocarina music. In the talent show, he played Chinese music with ocarina and bamboo flute, which won him rounds of applause and secured him the first place.

Qiao Jianzhen, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro which was the host for the contest, said that these students stood out from preliminaries and secured their spots in the final. Some students failed in the first year, but mustered up their courage to try again this year, for which they should take credit.

Shi Zequn, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Brazil, said that the number of contestants with higher-level Chinese proficiency has been on the rise. He believed that Chinese culture will be spread far and wide in Brazil.
