It has become the highest-level training workshop in international Chinese language education after 5-year brand building. With the advent of the era of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and big data, major changes have taken place in Chinese learning and teaching methods, which will also have far-reaching implications for the development of Confucius Institutes. The Confucius Institute will pay more attention to the development of information technology and strive to build a networked and digital communication platform.

Yuan Jun, Vice President of Beijing Foreign Studies University, said in his speech that the theme of this workshop, “Frontier and Application of Education Technology”, is also the focus of Beijing Foreign Studies University and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. He noted that he will adhere to the development path characteristics and continue to support the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching so as to make active efforts to improve the quality of international Chinese education and promote the construction of information technology.

The workshop invited Dr. Zhao Yong, Distinguished Professor of the Foundation of School of Education, the University of Kansas, Professor Zheng Yanqun, Ph.D. Supervisor of Beijing Language and Culture University, Professor Gu Yueguo, Ph.D. Supervisor and Researcher of Institute of Linguistics of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Cynthia White, Professor of applied linguistics of Massey University as guest speakers. During the three-day workshop, the experts conducted excellent reports on different topics including the misunderstanding and enlightenment of education technology, the development of international foreign language education technology, the hybrid learning model, the initiative of language teachers in the digital age, and the international Chinese Language teaching based on teaching calculations. Their reports contained both cutting-edge theory of technology and application of education and a large number of examples of teaching and research, which had aroused strong response from the participants.

Professor Zhao Yong has been named as one of the top ten most influential educational scholars in the United States for four consecutive years. His research focuses on the impact of globalization and technology on education. In his lecture, he pointed out that the huge potential of educational technology has not been fully explored. There exist five major misunderstandings of people in educational technology, namely, relations, application, goal, target, and implementation. Professor Zhao suggested that we can improve the quality of Chinese teaching and build a new international Chinese education ecosystem by adjusting the relations between technology and teachers and tapping into the potential of educational technology.

Professor Zheng Yanqun, combining her research and practice in international Chinese multimedia teaching, online teaching, corpus application and teaching calculation, introduced the frontier development of foreign language education technology and new progress and understanding of Chinese teaching technology and resource research, and the reflection on the significance and method of teaching using teaching calculation with specific examples. Professor Zheng suggested that we should fully understand the current research and development of educational technology, update our concepts, change means, and solve common and individual problems in the field of teaching and research.

Professor Gu Yueguo is the chief researcher for Innovative Program in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and an expert in pragmatics, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, and rhetoric. In recent years, he has been focusing on children's language development and education. In the lecture, Prof. Gu introduced the universal law of learning and the theories of multi-modality, multimedia and multi-environment with vivid and detailed examples. He believed that the fundamental principle of language teaching and teaching in other fields is that “teaching is determined by learning”. We must pay full attention to and respect the law of learning when using educational technology.

Professor Cynthia White is an expert in educational technology and online environmental research. In recent years, she has also paid close attention to distance learning in Chinese as a foreign language. In the lecture, she shared the specific research and teaching cases to explain that the language teachers in the digital age need to use the concept of teaching initiative to make adjustments and changes, and introduced computer-aided language teaching theory, the basic principles of research and practice, development trends, cutting-edge issues and practical paths.

During the three-day training, experts shared wonderful reports from different perspectives on the theory and practice of educational technology. Participants expressed that the workshop was rewarding. The course helped everyone to have a more systematic understanding of the development and the status quo of language education technology at home and abroad, and it also provided enlightenment for personal career development and research direction. They all hoped that Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching could continue to provide such training opportunities.
