Confucius Institute Promotes Development of Professional Chinese Teaching in Southeast Asia

From July 10 to 11 local time, sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and co-organized by the Pusat Bahasa Mandarin at University of Al Azhar Indonesia and the Chinese Department of the University of Al Azhar, the first International Seminar & Roundtable Meeting “Professional Chinese Teaching” in Southeast Asia was held in the capital of Jakarta. More than 200 people attended the meeting, including leaders of governmental education management agencies, universities and other educational and cultural institutions from China, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos and other countries, leaders of 6 colleges and universities with Confucius Institutes in Indonesia, Chinese and foreign directors of the 6 Confucius Institutes and representatives of Indonesian Chinese teachers.

This seminar focused on the new opportunities and challenges of Chinese teaching in Southeast Asia under the new situation of the Belt and Road Initiative. It explored new goals and new requirements for the deepening of Chinese teaching content from basic Chinese teaching to special-purpose Chinese teaching and jointly discussed the development path and strategy of professional Chinese education in Southeast Asia, aiming to further innovate, strengthen and regulate the professional Chinese teaching, play the positive role of the Confucius Institute in implementing the Belt and Road Initiative and promote the coordinated development of Chinese teaching in southeast region. The agenda of the seminar included opening ceremony, theme forum, president forum, special topic forum, closing ceremony and entertainment performances.

At the opening ceremony, Xiao Xiangzhong, Chinese Director of the Pusat Bahasa Mandarin at the University of Al Azhar, first reported on the preparatory work on behalf of the Preparatory Committee. Li Xin, Counselor of the Mission of China to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), on behalf of Ambassador Huang Xilian, expressed congratulations on the organization of the seminar. Yin Dan, Director General of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of Indonesia, delivered a speech on behalf of the Minister Muhammad Nasir and struck a gong to signal the opening of the seminar. Asep Saefuddin, President of the University of Al Azhar, Giyandi, Director General of the Department of Pesantren of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia, and Jimly Asshiddqie, Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Muslim Intellectuals, also delivered speeches respectively. In addition, on the opening ceremony the congratulatory letter from Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director-General of Hanban, was read.

On the theme forum, language teaching sub-forum and culture sub-forum, a total of 14 guests and delegates reported on the relevant topics of the seminar, such as “The Status Quo, Problems and Challenges of Chinese Teaching in Indonesia” by the Indonesian educator Fasli Jalal, “Language Education Policy and Prospect for the Development of Professional Chinese Education in the Philippines” by Zhang Shifang, the supervisor of the Chinese program of the Philippine Ministry of Education and so on .

The president forum is a major innovation of this seminar. The presidents of the 6 colleges and universities with Confucius Institutes and the Chinese and foreign directors of the 6 Confucius Institutes in Indonesia gathered for the first time to discuss the development of Chinese language teaching in Indonesia. On the forum, the presidents of the 6 colleges and universities with Confucius Institute jointly signed a “President Forum” memorandum, clarifying that the forum will be held once every two years and in turn by six colleges and universities to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between colleges and universities with Confucius Institutes and promote the healthy development of Confucius Institutes.

The seminar specially set up the procedure of statement of representatives, during which Gong Bencai, the chairman of China Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia, Guan Nan from the University of Bunda Mulia of Indonesia, and Xayasith Phouxay from the Academy of Social Sciences in Laos respectively made reports entitled “The Current Situation of Chinese-funded Enterprises and Demand for Chinese Talents in Indonesia”, “Analysis of Employment Situation of Chinese Professionals in Indonesian Universities” and “Overview of the Status Quo of Chinese Teaching in Laos”.

On the seminar, Xiao Xiangzhong gave special lectures entitled “The Context of Chinese Plus Era and Its Development Trends” and “Heuristic Teaching——How to Assist Chinese Teaching with Indonesian Language”, which led to the reflection and discussion of the participants.

In the entertainment performances of the closing ceremony, the impassioned welcome dance by the Indonesian shaman ignited the atmosphere of the venue. Traditional Chinese performances such as Tai Chi fan, tea art of long mouth pot, guzheng, calligraphy, Chinese opera, traditional Chinese dance and Jingdong drum won praise from the audience on the spot. Finally, in the singing of “Long Live Friendship” sung by the Confucius Institute Chorus, this seminar came to an end.
