China’s Scholar Teaches “Sustainable Development in China” in German University

On July 18th, 2018, Prof. Dr. Haiyun Chen finished his four-week lecture on "China's urbanization and sustainable development” at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Germany. The lecture he gave is part of the credit-bearing course under the title “Lecture Series on Sustainable Development in China”. The course is jointly organized by the Audi Confucius Institute Ingolstadt and the University’s School of Management (WFI-KU), Germany. Professor Chen comes from School of Economics and Management and the Think-Tank of Sustainable Development at Tongji University in China. This year, he is also the guest professor in the University’s School of Management.

The course started on April 16th and is scheduled to last for 10 weeks. Seven professors from German and Chinese universities and entrepreneurs from well-known Chinese companies in Germany will teach the course. This group of lecturers will provide multidisciplinary insights from business science, economics, engineering, entrepreneurship, environmental science, cultural geography. Professor Haiyun Chen is the first scholar coming from China to give this course since its launch.

During the four weeks, Prof.Dr.Haiyun Chen told the students the changes in China over the past 40 years, described the development and goals of urbanization in China, and evaluation system of urban sustainable development. Fifty-one undergraduates and postgraduates have chosen this course. The course is also open to the public. Prof.Dr.Chen’s lecture went on well. At the end of his lecture, quite a few students expressed their hope that Professor Chen will be their academic tutor and continue helping them with their study on the sustainability development in China and Germany as well.

When interviewed, Professor Haiyun Chen states, “In the past half century, the concept of sustainable development has drawn worldwide attention. People around the world are making unremitting efforts for the sustainable development of their economy and ecological environment. As the cooperation between China and the European Union, particularly Germany, has deepened in terms of sustainable development, the academic and cultural exchanges between the two countries have been actively carried out. It is a pioneering practice to open the lecture-based course on ‘Sustainable Development in China’ at German universities. This university has made it and has promoted it as a core course to the students of the whole university.”

Audi Confucius Institute Ingolstadt has contributed to the course in funding and helping decide the subjects of the lectures.
