On May 9th, the Cuba Regional Final of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students was held at the theater of the University of Havana. After three rounds of fierce competition, Raquel Toranzo from Instituto Superior Pedagogico Enrique Jose Varona stood out and won the first prize. She will go to China to participate in the final of the global “Chinese Bridge” competition representing Cuba.

Eight students from the Chinese class of the Confucius Institute at the University of Havana participated in the preliminary round. The competition consisted of three parts, namely, keynote speech themed “One World, One Family”, question and answer about Chinese history and culture, as well as talent show. In the talent show section, the contestants showed their unique skills such as Tai Chi, calligraphy, songs, Xinjiang dance, poetry recitation, and Chinese painting, warming up the atmosphere.

Raquel Toranzo has learned Chinese for three and a half years. In keynote speeches, she elaborated her understanding of “One World, One Family” with the experience of participating in a summer camp in Beijing in 2017. She said Chinese learning was like an invisible line that connected people with different colors and from different countries to form a big family. In talent shows, she presented her calligraphy skills by writing the Chinese characters of “One World, One Family” in three different writing styles prominent in three historical periods of China, surprising the audiences of nearly 200 at the scene.

At the interval, the students of the Confucius Institute choir sang songs such as I Love You China, In My Songs and Chinese Bridge, winning rounds of applause from the audience.

Since the official operation of the Confucius Institute at the University of Havana in 2009, nearly 5,000 Cuban students have completed their study. At present, there are nearly 700 students attending school or participating in related training courses.
