On April 21st, local time, the inauguration ceremony of the model Confucius Institute building was held at Cairo University, Egypt. Khaled Abd-Elghafar, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Egypt, Mohamed Othman Al-Khasht, President of Cairo University, Song Aiguo, Chinese Ambassador to Egypt, Yu Yunfeng, Deputy Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director-General of Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) and Tian Gang, Vice President of Peking University, attended the ceremony.

In his speech, Song said that the Confucius Institute at Cairo University, as the first Confucius Institute in Egypt and even North Africa, has made its due contributions to the development of China-Egypt friendship. The Confucius Institute’s 10-year progress was an embodiment of the cooperation in Chinese language teaching in Egypt and in educational exchanges between the two countries. Song affirmed the Confucius Institute’s contributions to Chinese language teaching, and hoped it could continue to cultivate more excellent good-will messengers for Egypt and China.

On behalf of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Yu Yunfeng congratulated on the completion of the building. He said that it marks a new starting point for the development of the Confucius Institute at Cairo University, as well as a new outcome of cooperation between Egypt and China in education. Moreover, it is a milestone of further development of friendship between both countries. Furthermore, he expressed three expectations for the Confucius Institute’s future development. The first is to focus on improving the efficiency and quality, as well as enriching the connotation of development. The second is to focus on working more effectively as a model. The third is to focus on friendly relations between Egypt and China by forging a multiple platform for exchanges. He hoped that the Confucius Institute at Cairo University would make efforts to develop itself into the Chinese language teaching and research center in Egypt, in North Africa and even in the whole Arab region as well as into the local Chinese teacher training center to better serve Chinese learners, provide stronger support for the local community, and promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges between Egypt and China.

Tian Gang said in his speech that the Confucius Institute at Cairo University had carried out not only Chinese language teaching at various levels but also abundant and colorful cultural exchange activities since its establishment, and had reached the stage of relatively mature and distinctive development. With an enrollment of over three thousand students, the Institute had become one of the best Confucius Institutes in Arab countries. Tian hoped that in the future, it would take a further step in compiling local Chinese textbooks, training local Chinese teachers, editing Chinese and Arab journals and developing online courses.

Rehab Mahamud, Egyptian Director of the Confucius Institute at Cairo University, said that he expected the Institute to bring into full play its role in promoting Chinese culture, Chinese teaching, China studies and translation after the inauguration of the model building.

Dance “Land of Courtesy and Propriety”

At the inauguration ceremony, teachers and students from the Institute performed on the stage the dance, “Land of Courtesy and Propriety”, which showed the beauty of Chinese etiquette. The teachers recited the poem “The Belt and Road”, expressing their expectations for the development of China-Egypt relations. In the end, teachers and students sang in chorus “Our Country” and “law kona banhbaha”.
