7th Spring Festival Parade Held in Valencia, Spain

On local time February 17th, 2018, the first day of Chinese Lunar New Year, the Seventh Spring Festival Parade was staged in Mayor Plaza and Pelayo Avenue,Valencia,Spain . More than 80,000 Valencian citizens and tourists flocked to the scenes to experience the 2018 Chinese New Year celebrations.

This year’s Spring Festival parade was an unprecedented success. With the strong support from the municipal government of Valencia, led by the Confucius Institute of the University of Valencia(CIUV), the Tourism Administration of Valencia, Chinese Commercial Association in Valencia and other organizations from Chinese communities, like Chinese language schools, Chinese Students Association, and companies such as Huawei, Hiscense, El Corte Ingles, Airfrance and adif, jointly organized the activities. The Valencias Metropolitan Police Department gave a great deal of assistance in the security of the event and ensured that the event was successfully completed.

The activities mainly consists of two parts: Chinese Cultural Fair and Parade. At ten o'clock in the morning, the Chinese Culture Expo was opened in the City Plaza. CIUV, the Spanish Chinese Cultural Association, the Hanlin School of Chinese Arts, the Valencia Yanjing Han School, Ronghua Restaurant, Ou’s Restaurant, the Chinese Students Association of Valencia and other exhibitors demonstrated their own special products, such as Chinese-Spanish "Confucius Institute" periodicals, Chinese New Year food, cheongsam and Han Clothing performances, martial arts performances, and so on. On the outdoor stage actors from Chinese community performed many Chinese folk songs and children's songs. The New Year gifts of Chinese names written on Chinese Calendars on site presented by Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia became the focus of attention. The event culminated in 6.30pm. The Municipal Plaza was full of people, Pelayo Avenue was flanked by overcrowding.Valencian citizens came out to the city center to watch or join the Chinese New Year parade. Among the parade were dragon dance, lion dance, drum dance, multi-ethnic costume show, Tai Chi Fan performance, kite flying performance and so on. Mr. Zhu Jian, Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Spain, Mr. Joan Calabuig Rull, Head of EU Affairs and External Relations of the Government of Valencian Community, Ms. Sandra Gómez, Vice Mayor of the City of Valencia, Mr. Miguel Gonsales, Director of the Valencia Police Department, Mr. Carles Lopez, Deputy Mayor of Manises,Mr. Wuning, Chairman of Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Valencia and some other guests,Spanish and Chinese, attended the opening ceremony of the Chinese Culture Expo and the Parade. The opening ceremony was chaired by Vicente Andreu, Director CIUV. Mr. Zhu Jian, Mr. Joan Calabuig Rull, Ms. Sandra Gómez, Mr. Wu Ning spoke in turn,extending their best wishes for the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Dog to Chinese expatriates living in Valencia and Spain. The whole event ended with beautiful fireworks and chorus cheers.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia regards the Spring Festival as an important theme of her cultural activities and organizes a series of activities on every Spring Festival. In the 2018 Spring Festival of the Year, in addition to taking the lead in organizing the festival parade in Valencia, CIUV have organized a number of Spring Festival cultural workshops, including "Lion Dance Culture in China", "Paper-cutting themed on Chinese New Year" , "Chinese Dragon Culture Exhibition", “lantern Making" and so on. 2018 is the opening year of the new decade of CIUV. As a model Confucius Institute, she will continue to explore ways of developing Confucius Institutes in accordance with the guiding ideology of "Insisting and Innovating."
