First Confucius Classroom Inaugurated in Czech Republic, a Window into Chinese Culture

According to the website of the Chinese Embassy in the Czech Republic, VSB-Technical University of Ostrava has officially established a Confucius Classroom. The establishment has been regarded as another important outcome of further educational exchanges and cooperation between China and the European nation for promoting Chinese language ever since the sole Confucius Institute was set up in Palacky University in 2007.

Chen Jianjun, Political Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in the Czech Republic, and Zhao Changtao, First Secretary of Educational Affairs, were invited to the inauguration and signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding.

On behalf of the Chinese Embassy, Chen Jianjun expressed his hearty congratulations to the establishment. In his speech, he reviewed the history of educational exchanges between the two countries, long-standing friendship between Czech and Hebei Province and fruitful cooperation between universities of the two countries. He also elaborated the importance of people-to-people and cultural exchanges on the promotion of close relationship between the two peoples.

Chen also said that the feat would not only facilitate Chinese learning for Czech teachers, students and the public, but also serve as a significant window for the local people to glimpse into China and its culture. The Chinese Embassy will support the development of the Confucius Classroom at the Technical University of Ostrava. He hoped that this Confucius Classroom abide by local laws, play a positive role in non-governmental exchanges and actively contribute to the development of educational cooperation and people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries as well as to the promotion of friendship between the two peoples.

With the support of the Chinese Embassy, a variety of activities were successfully held at the inauguration ceremony, from which the participants could learn and experience Chinese culture. These activities, including a photo exhibition featuring the friendship between the two countries and displays of Chinese calligraphy, tea art and folk music, attracted school teachers and students as well as locals, who participated enthusiastically.

Chinese volunteers from the Confucius Institute at Palacky University and the Institute of Technology and Business in Ceska Budejovice staged wonderful shows of Chinese paper cutting, Chinese knots and the Dai ethnic dance. Dumplings made by students from the Student Union became the most popular food of the day with Chinese and native guests.

The Confucius Classroom at the Technical University of Ostrava was approved by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and co-established by Hebei Geological University and Technical University of Ostrava.
