7th Spring Festival Street Folk Performance Held in Valencia, Spain

On February 17th, local time, January 2nd in Chinese lunar calendar, Valencia held 7th Spring Festival Street Folk Performance at Valencia City Square and Pelayo Street. The event attracted more than 80,000 Valencia residents and visitors to experience the activities of Spring Festival.

Organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia, the performance was co-organized by Valencia Tourist Office, China Chamber of Commerce in Valencia, Chinese Communities, Huawei, Hisense, El Corte Inglés, Airfrance, Adif and other commercial institutions. The Chinese Embassy in Spain and the Valencia municipal government also contributed to the success of the event. Meanwhile Valencia Police Station dispatched adequate police force to guarantee the security of the celebration.

Culture Exposition and Float Parade were presented as two major culture activities of the event. Joan Calabuig Rull, Deputy of Spanish National Parliament for Valencia, Sandra Gómez, Deputy Mayor of Valencia municipal government, Miguel Gonsales, Valencia Police Chief, Carles Lopez, Deputy Mayor of Manises, Zhu Jian, Counselor of Chinese Embassy in Spain, Wu Ning, President of Valencia Chamber of Commerce and others attended the event.

Chinese Culture Exposition was held at Valencia City Square. Exhibitors from the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia, Spanish Han Culture Association, Hanlin Academy, Yanjing Academia De Chino, Real Rong Hua Valencia, European Restaurant, Valencia Chinese Student Association and other institutions displayed a rich cultural feast with their specialties and custom shows. The Chinese-Spanish bilingual journal Confucius Institute, Spring Festival cuisine, cheongsam and Hanfu shows, martial arts shows etc. Some Chinese traditional folk music and songs as well as children dance were performed on open stages. Chinese Calligraphy show by the Confucius Institute turned to be the spotlight of the event, and many visitors and tourists queued up to have a look.

At 6:00 pm, the city square was in full swing and the upcoming float parade brought the activity to a climax. The opening ceremony was hosted by Vicente Andreu, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute, and all the guests extended their New Year’s greetings in their speeches.

Started with dragon dance, lion dance, waist drum, multi-national dress performance, Taiji fan performance, kite exhibition etc, the parade ended with beautiful firework and cheers.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia takes the Chinese Spring Festival as an important theme of cultural activities t. In this year, apart from the 2018 Spring Festival Street Folk Performance in Valencia, the Institute also opened many Spring Festival Culture workshops, such as “Lion Dance in China”, “Spring Festival theme paper-cutting”, “Chinese Spring Festival customs”, “Chinese dragon culture exhibition”, and “hand-made lantern in the Lantern Festival”. The year 2018 initiated a new era of next ten-year-development circle for the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia. As a model Confucius Institute, guided by the principles of “insistence and innovation”, the Institute would continuously explore new development patterns.
