Clinton Elementary School Holds Chinese New Year Celebration

On February 9th local time, a Chinese New Year Celebration combined with art performances and dragon parade was held at Clinton Elementary School in South Carolina. Clinton Elementary School has been a teaching site of the Confucius Institute at Presbyterian College since 2016.

2018 Chinese New Year Celebration was organized by Liu Han, a teacher from Confucius Institute. Activities including Chinese Zodiac play, Chinese costume fashion show, Kungfu tea ceremony, singing Chinese songs, telling Chinese legends, kicking the shuttlecock and writing Confucius quotes were presented by students from third to fifth grade. In the afternoon, along with traditional Chinese New Year music, all the students came out and joined the dragon parade. Students from fifth grade led the dragon while kindergarten to second graders held hand-made firecrackers, paper lanterns and dragon masks in the parade.

Dr David O’shields, the school district superintendent, together with the student parents, teachers participated in the big event. They all enjoyed the Chinese celebration. One of the parents said his child had practiced and been excited about performing the tea ceremony in front of the whole school for the whole month. There was lots of fun to get students involved in the celebration. Melodie Edwards, principal of CES thanked the Chinese teacher Liu Han for organizing a variety of traditional Chinese performances and games. She stated that Clinton Elementary looked forward to keeping the Chinese New Year Celebration a tradition in the school and seeing students open their horizon in the process of learning Chinese language and culture with teachers from Confucius Institute.

Local newspaper The Clinton Chronicle and Laurens County Advertiser also had a special report on the celebration. Chinese New Year Celebration brought authentic Chinese traditions and cultures to Clinton, a small town in South Carolina. The cooperation between Confucius Institute and the school district makes it possible for kids in the town to have an access to Chinese language and culture.
