On February 9th local time, the 2018 Spring Festival Gala, jointly organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of León in Spain and local institutions and enterprises, kicked off at San Francisco Theatre in León. María, the head of the Department of International Exchanges of the University of León, Óscar, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute, Chen Chen, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of León and more than 300 local citizens watched the performance.

María stressed in her speech that the University of León highly valued various activities held by the Confucius Institute, which opened a new window and a new channel for the University of León to cooperate with local communities, organizations, and other universities with Chinese as the bridge and the Confucius Institute as the medium for cultural exchanges.

In his speech, Óscar hoped that the Confucius Institute could build closer cooperation relations with more local organizations through this gala. Chen Chen said that the Spring Festival Gala displayed the achievements in education of the Confucius Institute in the past year, and it also represented good wishes for the New Year.

The performances began in a joyous atmosphere with the dance “Happy Chinese New Year” by students from the Confucius Institute. The programs by the volunteer teachers and students raised the atmosphere into a peak over and over again.

Volunteer teachers performed a Beijing Opera medley of “Su San Under Police Escort”, “Regrets of Life and Death”, “Mu Guiying Takes Command” and other classic pieces, bringing the audience the charm of oriental drama. The Mongolian Dance Horizon, the Chinese boxing “The Eighteen Arhat Methods of Shaolin Kungfu”, and the swordplay displayed the teachers’ talents to the audience, winning waves of applause.

Students from the Confucius Institute also elaborated a series of programs. Students from HSK4 staged the drama “Butterfly Lovers”, one of the Chinese classical love stories. Lots of parents and their children from local areas who were learning Chinese together performed some parent-child programs, such as “Two Tigers”, “Three Prosperity Gems” and “Counting Ducks”. Eva from HSK3, a local Taiji teacher, played the Taiji Fan together with her students.

The dance “Jasmine” and the song “Liangliang” performed by students and teachers from the Confucius Institute delighted the audience.

In addition, the Confucius Institute invited Coro Ángel Barja, a choir of the University of León, to sing a wonderful chorus.
