On February 10th local time, 2018 Spring Temple Fair was held at the central park of Maputo. The fair was the first of its kind in Mozambique co-organized by the Confucius Institute of Mondlane University and the China-Mozambique International Association of Foreign Students. Su Jian, Chinese Ambassador to Mozambique, Counselor Liu Xiaoguang, and Chinese enterprises’ representatives and delegates to Mozambique attended the event at invitation. The fair had attracted thousands of overseas Chinese and local people.

The event kicked off with wonderful Chinese martial arts performances and Mozambique's local dance. Su Jian stressed in his speech that as more and more Mozambicans begin to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture, they are ambassadors of friendship between the two nations. He hoped that the two sides could work together to promote China-Mozambique friendship.

Guo Jianling, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, expressed in the speech that she hopes students could experience Chinese New Year and traditional Chinese culture through the temple fair, a platform of China-Mozambique exchanges.

The exhibition booths of various programs, such as paper-cut, calligraphy, martial arts and Chinese knots, had attracted many who were eager to learn and try. The paper-cutting booth drew special attention for its vivid Chinese zodiac characters. After the patient instruction of teachers, many people showed keen interest in paper-cutting and left contently with their own works.

Apart from talent shows, Chinese cuisine was another spotlight at the fair. The colorful and tasty Chinese mixed fried rice and fried noodles with assorted meat, sauced beef and fried scallion pancake, which were elaborately prepared by the chef of Hua’an Hotel, were served for tourists to taste. Chinese medlar, red dates as well as other snacks were popular and many Mozambican local specialties were also favored by Chinese visitors.

Ou Jia, the champion of the 2017 “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students, won warm applause for her sweet song “Waiting the Wind of the Clear Day”. A teacher from the Confucius Institute impressed audiences with “Rosemary”, a popular song by Chinese singer Jay Zhou. The melodious flute lingers around and the exciting local dancing rocked the site with warm festive atmosphere, winning waves of applauses.
