The following performances including the Chinese-Russian bilingual song “Red Berries in Blossom”, Huangmei Opera “Emperor’s Female Son-in-law" and Tai Chi boxing were delivered in turns, swamping the scene with laughter and applause from the nearly 100 elderly audience.

In the Chinese culture experience segment, the elders watched the tea art performance and learned to write the Chinese character “Fu” with Chinese brushes, having a personal contact with Chinese culture. Afterwards they wrote down their wishes for the Chinese Spring Festival and stuck them on the wishing walls named “Health”, “Blessing” and “Care”.

Shi Yajun, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Kyiv National Linguistic University, said that Spring Festival is a traditional Chinese festival in which people reunite with their fami-lies, respect and honor the aged. Taking this festival as a good opportunity, the Confucius Institute conducted a series of recreational and social activities and introduced Chinese culture to those elders, conveying to them the warmth of the people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Ukraine.

Vladislav Shalay, Deputy Director of the Kyie Geriatric Nursing Home, also of age, confessed that the activities brought to the nursing home a kind of “fairytale” warmth. Although some elderly people did not attend the event due to inability in moving about, all people in the nursing home felt the responsibility and kindness in Chinese culture.

“We also felt the enthusiasm of the Ukrainian elderly people thanks to these activities and were greatly moved by the traditional friendship between our two peoples,” said Shi Yajun.

The next day will be the 23rd day of the last Chinese lunar month. According to Chinese tradition, it is called “Xiaonian”, which means that people will formally embrace the Chinese New Year.
