Confucius Institute at University of Nairobi in Kenya Holds Launching Ceremony for New Teaching Area

On January 29th, the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi in Kenya held the launching ceremony for its new teaching area. Peter Mbithi, President of the university, Henry Mutoro, Vice President, Liu Xianfa, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Wang Xuezheng, Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, Zhang Gang, Director of the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, and staff of the Confucius Institute attended the event.

The ceremony was hosted by an indigenous Chinese teacher named Ruth. The choir of the Confucius Institute sang “Malaika” and “On the Hopeful Field”. Dai Qian, an award winner of the “Chinese Bridge” competition, performed the dance “Homecoming after the War”.

Peter Mbithi expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its investment in Kenya’s education in his address. He said that the deepening of China-Kenya relations has benefited Kenya in many cooperative projects. The launching of the new teaching area will improve the learning environment for students in the university, which is conducive to boosting learning efficiency. He believed that in the future, the Confucius Institute and the University of Nairobi will continue to gain momentum and the cooperation between the two countries will get closer.

In his address, Liu Xianfa praised the continuous maintenance of friendly relationship between China and Kenya and thanked to the university for its support and help to the Confucius Institute. He said that the development of a nation is shouldered by the younger generation. Therefore, providing the next generation with better education is the duty of government. Better teaching environment has laid a solid foundation for the further development of Confucius Institutes.

After the speeches, the guests visited the new teaching area. In the Chinese Culture Experience Center, volunteer teachers of the Confucius Institute demonstrated how to use the all-in-one machine. In the language lab, the teachers demonstrated how to use audio devices to conduct Chinese teaching and have the guests experience them. At last, guests watched the promotional video of “Beautiful China” in the projection room.
