The Thailand Chinese Language Academic Contest was held in Samut Prakan Province, attracting more than 300 students from 14 Chinese schools in eastern Thailand.

Contesting students from elementary, middle and high schools gave their best at the five existing segments, namely comprehensive abilities, poem recitation, singing, calligraphy and transcription. With three new events, namely, public speaking, storytelling and skits, being added to the contest, students can showcase their Chinese language ability from various perspectives.

The contestants all expressed that they are keen on activities of this kind, and would cherish every opportunity to exercise their expertise. Anita from Sawang Boriboon Wittaya School was crowned champion of the comprehensive segment for delivering “How Liang Hongyu's War Drum Caused the Jin Army to Retreat”, a monologue story-telling show. Anita has studied Chinese language for nine years, and her sister once won the first prize of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition in the Thailand Division. She hopes to continue making progress in learning Chinese language just as her sister did.

Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Burapha University Zhang Yulin said that in terms of Chinese language teaching, the local Chinese schools in eastern Thailand have many aspects that can be studied and promoted. These schools have trained many talents with excellent Chinese proficiency for Thailand. Apart from the adequate arrangement of Chinese language lessons, “promoting teaching through contests” and “promoting studying through contests” also serve as good teaching methods.

The contest was co-hosted by the Confucius Institute at Burapha University, the Chinese School Association, and the sociable of Eastern Chinese School Association in Thailand.
