ROK Confucius Institute at Sehan University Holds Tenth Anniversary Celebration

On November 16th, the Confucius Institute at Sehan University held a celebration for its tenth anniversary. More than 300 guests attended the event, including Lee Jae-Cheol, Deputy Mayor of Mokpo, Lee Gyeong-su, President of Sehan University, Sun Xianyu, Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Gwangju, Yi Chuijie, Deputy Secretary of the Party of Qingdao University—the Chinese partner of Sehan University, Jung Ki-Young, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute, Piao Yingji, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute and other guests from all walks of life.

Jung Ki-Young first made the opening remarks in which he introduced the major activities held by the Confucius Institute at Sehan University in the last decade and expressed gratitude to the faculty of the Confucius Institute for their dedication.

Lee Gyeong-su indicated in his speech that Sehan University and Qingdao University have been working together to provide administrative and financial support, which helps to facilitate the smooth organization of various events and the tremendous development of the institute.

Sun Xianyu expressed warm congratulations on the 10th anniversary of the institute. He said that Sehan University has accomplished fruitful results since its establishment. With the support and help of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Qingdao University, Sehan University has dedicated itself to promoting Chinese language teaching and disseminating Chinese culture, making positive contributions to strengthening mutual understanding and friendship between peoples of China and the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Yi Chuijie noted that Qingdao University has been attaching great importance to the building and development of the Confucius Institute and regards its success as an important component of Qingdao University’s international strategies. In the past decade, Qingdao University has altogether sent five Chinese directors, four Chinese language teachers and nearly fifty volunteer teachers to help disseminate Chinese language and culture.

At the opening ceremony, Lee Gyeong-su awarded the “Plaque of Appreciation” to Park Hong-Ryull, Mayor of Mokpo, Zhou Xiaoli, Assistant to President of Qingdao University, Piao Zhenzi, former Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute and “Plaque of Dedication” to student Lee Eng-Hwa for their dedication and support to the Confucius Institute at Sehan University.

After the awarding ceremony, art troupe of Qingdao University along with teachers and students from Jinseon Girls’ High School and the Confucius Institute presented wonderful performances. The remix songs performed by the teachers of the Confucius Institute enabled the audience to experience the charm of Chinese folk songs. The fashionable songs and dances performance by Jinseon Girls’ High School students fully displayed their youthful energy. The traditional singing and dancing as well as taekwondo performances by the students of Sehan University won thunderous applause from the audience. Mongolia dance, Dai dance, modern dance and flute performances by the art troupe of Qingdao University added Chinese characteristics to the celebration.
