First Confucius Institute in Uruguay Officially Unveiled

On December, 29th, the Confucius Institute in Uruguay which was co-established by Qingdao University and University of Republic of Uruguay was officially unveiled in Montevideo, making the institute first one in Uruguay.

The opening ceremony was attended by Dong Xiaojun, Chinese Ambassador to Uruguay, Fernando Lugris, Uruguayan Ambassador to China, Roberto Markarian, Rector of the University of Republic of Uruguay, Fan Yuejin, President of Qingdao University, as well as approximately 200 local Chinese residents.

Dong Xiaojun pointed out in his speech that the establishment of the first Confucius Institute in Uruguay marked the new age of the cultural exchange and educational cooperation between China and Uruguay, and was also a vital milestone in the development of China-Uruguay relations.

2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Uruguay, and the two countries will host celebrations in various fields. Roberto Markarian believed the both sides will take the establishment of the Confucius Institute as an opportunity to promote the cultural exchanges of both sides, so as to boost cooperation in other fields accordingly.
