Confucius Institute at University of Yaounde II Holds Its 10th Anniversary and Inauguration of Model Confucius Institute Building

On November 17th, local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of Yaounde II held its 10th anniversary ceremony and the inauguration of the model Confucius Institute building. Guests present at the events included Jacques Fame Ndongo, Minister of Higher Education of Cameroon, Adolphe Minkoa She, Rector of the University of Yaounde II and Foreign Chairman of the Council of the Confucius Institute at University of Yaounde II, Wei Wenhua, Chinese Ambassador to Cameroon, Zheng Mengzhuang, President of Zhejiang Normal University and Chinese Chairman of the Council of the Confucius Institute at the University of Yaounde II. Besides, representatives from 25 collaborating institutions and local Chinese-funded enterprises, local Chinese teachers, and alumni of the Confucius Institute also attended the event.

The ceremony kicked off with the national anthems of China and Cameroon. In the opening speech, Jacques Fame Ndongo briefly reviewed the development of the Confucius Institute at the University of Yaounde II and fully acknowledged the achievements that the Confucius Institute made in teaching Chinese language and promoting Chinese culture.

Adolphe Minkoa She appreciated the friendly cooperation between China and Cameron in co-building the Confucius Institute there. He also expected that both Cameroon and China would enhance their cooperation and exchange in the future.

Wei Wenhua said that the Confucius Institute represents the fruit of partnership between the University of Yaounde II and Zhejiang Normal University and the brilliant achievement of the cooperation between China and Cameroon. The Institute serves as a significant platform to spread Chinese language and culture and enhance friendly cooperation between the two countries.

Zheng Mengzhuang expressed that with mutual trust and friendly cooperation between China and Cameroon, the Confucius Institute will surely embrace remarkable development and achievements in the next ten years.

Jiang Yujiao, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at University of Yaounde II read out the congratulation letter from Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). In the letter, senior officials including the Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarter and the Deputy Director-General of Hanban congratulated the institute on its 10th anniversary. They also expressed their support to the future construction and development of the institute and believed that the Confucius Institute will score more achievements.

Later, Jacques Fame Ndongo and Wei Wenhua cut the ribbon for the Model Confucius Institute building. Then Minkoa She and Zheng Mengzhuang inaugurated the nameplate of “Model Confucius Institute” issued by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban).

The ceremony also included some fantastic performances by the students, for example, students of the institute sang “The Toast Song” and a folk song called “Hometown”. Primary students from La Gaiete International School recited poetries to show their achievements in Chinese learning, and middle school students from the Centre of Excellence in Microscience (CEM) performed “A State of Etiquette”, all of which amazed the audience. Besides, shows including Chinese martial arts and dramas also received warm applause from the audience.

Celebration of 10th anniversary

After the decade-long development, the Confucius Institute at the University of Yaounde II has become the first institute with various teaching sites in Africa, and is also the first in the continent to establish the major of Chinese teaching for master and bachelor studies, successfully integrating Chinese language into the national educational system of Cameroon. At present, the institute has set up 26 teaching sites with more than 40 teachers and volunteers teaching Chinese language to 15,000 registered students. Besides, the institute has trained around 220 local teachers on teaching Chinese language and compiled two textbooks for Chinese language learners in Cameroon, namely, Hello, Cameroon and Let us Study Mandarin. Moreover, the institute has succeeded in recommending 500 candidates to apply for the Confucius Institute Scholarships and the Chinese Government Scholarships for further study in China. The institute also organized hundreds of students, local teachers, and government officials to participate in summer camps held in China. Furthermore, the contestants from the institute have yielded excellent results in the Chinese Bridge Competetion.
