Unveiling Ceremony of Confucius Classroom at Tbilisi Open University Held

On November 16th local time, the unveiling ceremony of the Confucius Classroom at Tbilisi Open University in Georgia was held. Distinguished guests present at the ceremony were Nino, Director of the Division of Teacher and Leader Support and Development of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, Tea, the official of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, Zauri, Chairman of Tbilisi Open University, Nodari, President of Tbilisi Open University, Zuo Hongbo, Political Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Georgia, Pan Baotian, Vice President of Lanzhou University, Zhang Wengang and Tao Hong, Dean and Vice Dean of the School of International Cultural Exchange of Lanzhou University. Over 200 people attended the ceremony, including representatives of Chinese-funded enterprises in Georgia, people from all walks of life in Georgia as well as teacher and student representatives.

In Zauri's speech, he pointed out that Tbilisi Open University has always adhered to the educational philosophy that features openness and cooperation and strived to cultivate more talents for bilateral exchanges. He said the establishment of the Confucius Classroom of Tbilisi Open University would inject new impetus into the Chinese teaching in Georgia and also wished bilateral cooperation a brighter future.

Pan Baotian briefed bilateral cooperation in running schools and noted that the establishment of the Confucius Classroom at Tbilisi Open University will further promote the bilateral exchanges in education and culture and provide a more open and broader platform for the friendly cooperation between both sides in the future.

Tao Hong read out a congratulatory letter from the Confucius Institute Headquarters. The Confucius Institute Headquarters expressed in the letter that both Georgia and China enjoy a time-honored history. With joint efforts of both sides, the Confucius Classroom of Tbilisi Open University will certainly become an important platform for local students and people to study Chinese and learn about Chinese traditional culture, and write a new chapter for the friendly relationship between China and Georgia.

At the ceremony, Nodari awarded the Certificate of Honorary Professor to Che Rushan, Chinese Director of the Confucius Classroom. Then, Zauri, Nodari, Zuo Hongbo and Pan Baotian jointly inaugurated the Confucius Classroom.

After the unveiling ceremony, teachers and students from Tbilisi Open University put on a wonderful performance for the guests present. The performance started with a light and lively Chinese song Leave Me Alone sung by a Chinese-learning student, Tamar. The dynamic melody and joyful dance lit up the atmosphere immediately; the display of traditional costume by the Chinese teachers also showed the audience the changes of Chinese traditional costume; “píngpíngzèzè, zèzèpíngpíng……”a popular Chinese song sung by students Anna and Maryam also gained waves of applause from the audience with their standard pronunciation and clear enunciation; the Tai Chi Fan and shadowboxing show performed by the teachers and students of the Confucius Classroom displayed strength and vigor; Chinese-learning student George read the poem Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again with a good demonstration of the poet’s emotions; the chorus Love my China performed by the Chinese teachers conveyed their love to the motherland despite being far abroad and brought the event to the climax.

At last, the guests visited the Confucius Classroom. Zuo Hongbo expressed his congratulations on the achievements made by the Confucius Classroom so far and placed great expectations on the future development of the Confucius Classroom. It is hoped that Confucius Classroom can seize the opportunity to strengthen language and cultural exchanges and make contributions to the communication between the two peoples.
