First Confucius Institute in South America Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary, Chinese Director Zhang Huijing Commended

On November 2nd local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of Los Andes held the ceremony for its 10th anniversary at the Chancellor Office Building. Li Nianping, Chinese Ambassador to Colombia, Pablo Navas, President of the University of Los Andes, Silvia Restrepo, Vice President, Carl Langebaek, Academic Vice President, Raquel Rojas, President of Confucius Classroom at Gimnasio Vermont, Hugo Fazio, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Felipe Castañeda, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute attended the ceremony.

Li Nianping acknowledged in his address the important contributions of the Confucius Institute at the University of Los Andes to promoting Chinese language teaching and Chinese culture over the past decade and praised the pioneering and leading role played by it, its affiliated Confucius Classrooms and Chinese teaching sites.

Pablo Navas expressed his congratulations on the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute at the University of Los Andes and indicated that the establishment of the institute has had a significant influence on students of the university in learning Chinese and understanding Chinese culture.

Zhang Huijing, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute read out the congratulatory letter from Zhang Ya, Deputy Secretary of CPC Committee of Nankai University—the Chinese partner institution, in which he congratulated the Confucius Institute on its 10th anniversary, thanked Hanban, the Chinese Embassy in Colombia and the University of Los Andes for their support and assistance, and expressed that Nankai University would support as always the development of the Confucius Institute.

Raquel Rojas, on behalf of the affiliated Confucius classrooms, gave a speech in which he summarized their achievements in the past few years with the help of the institute, expressed gratitude to the Confucius Institute at the University of Los Andes, and said that they would strongly support and promote Chinese teaching in primary and secondary schools.

Following the speeches, a video was played to show the development course of the institute over the past decade, as well as its achievements in teaching, cultural promotion, scientific research and other fields. The Confucius Institute at the University of Los Andes, founded on November 2nd, 2007, is the first Confucius Institute in South America. It has formed its own characteristics in textbook compilation, Chinese studies, curriculum of Chinese culture and other areas, and owns three affiliated Confucius Classrooms and two Chinese teaching sites. Zhang Huijing has won the Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence Award for three consecutive years and was named the Most Beautiful Chinese Teacher in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Global Confucius Institutes. In 2010, its self-compiled textbook Chino Paso a Paso (Learning Chinese Step by Step) was awarded the “Outstanding International Chinese Material” by the Confucius Institute Headquarters.

In the end, Carl Langebaek made a concluding speech, highly praising Zhang Huijing’s contributions to promoting cultural exchanges and inter-school cooperation between the two countries. Pablo Navas personally awarded Zhang Huijing the medal of the “Outstanding Confucius Institute Leadership Award for the First Ten Years”.

During the cerebration, the guests also watched Erhu performance by Yi Yanjie, member of the Political Section at the Chinese Embassy, and attended the party after the cerebration.
