Xiamen University Helps Chinese Culture Craze Sweeps Turkey by Establishing Confucius Institute

A craze for Chinese culture is now sweeping Turkey with the increased cultural exchanges between the two countries. Xiamen University seized the opportunity to co-establish a Confucius Institute with Middle East Technical University (METU), devoting itself to popularizing the Chinese language in the world.

On November 16th, the Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters and the Office of Confucius Institute Affairs at Xiamen University claimed that the Confucius Institute at METU visited the Ministry of National Education Turkey upon invitation. The two sides planed and exchanged views on the processing details of the project in promoting the Chinese course in all Turkish secondary public schools.

The Confucius Institute, at the invitation of Prime Minister’ Office of Turkey, opened its first Chinese course in the Prime Minister’s Office of Turkey this April. Led by the Confucius Institute teachers, more than 20 civil servants of the official residence attended a formal ceremony for accepting students, paying tribute to the Confucius statue, and hereby started their three-month journey of Chinese learning.

Three months thereafter, the Confucius Institute at METU visited the Prime Minister’ Office again on invitation. Both sides had an in-depth discussion on the continuation of the Chinese course in the Prime Minister’s Office and signing a cooperation intention agreement on jointly establishing a Chinese Language & Culture Center with the Prime Minister’s Office. Both sides reached consensus and were ready to sign a cooperation agreement.

In July, the Ministry of National Education of Turkey hosted a Symposium on Promoting Chinese Courses initiated by the Confucius Institute at METU. The decision to promote Chinese courses in all Turkey public schools was officially made for the first time. And the promotion team was thereby set up and the memorandum of all the members’ contact details was completed. Mustafa Hilmi Çolakoğlu, Deputy Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Education of Turkey, acted as the promoting representative of Turkey and Du Yun, Director of the Confucius Institute served as the promoting representative of China.

As the cooperation advanced, Mustafa Hilmi Çolakoğlu met with the representatives from the Confucius Institute for many times and had in-depth discussions regarding the details and the operation of the project. He expected that with considerable assistance from the Confucius Institute at METU, the Ministry of National Education will tailor practicable Chinese promotion policies to the conditions of the Turkish education, promoting “Chinese craze” to grow more popular.
