At local time 14th September, in order to let New Zealand kids have a better understanding of Chinese culture, Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington walked into Kahutara Primary School and held Discover China! martial arts workshop. The facilitator Hernan, a teacher from local martial arts school, had learned martial arts in Chili for many years and had rich experience in teaching.

First of all, Hernan showed the students many weapons used in martial arts, such as Shaolin cudgel, Nun Chucks, nine-section whip, broadsword etc. He also taught the students how to use those weapons. The students were very curious about those weapons and kept on singing praises.

Martial arts has many schools and Hernan prefers Shaolin Martial Arts. He explained the origin and characteristics of martial arts and taught students two sections of basic movement in martial arts. Then, with the schoolteacher, Hernan showed how to get rid of the opponent’s constraint. Besides, he also taught the students how to move quickly in martial arts. The students studied hard and mimicked it perfectly.
