Confucius Institute at San Francisco State University Hosts “Guzheng and Poems
— A Tour of Chinese Music Culture”

Confucius Institute and Chinese Program at San Francisco State University jointly hosted a special Chinese music performance of “Zheng and Poems – A Tour of Chinese Music Culture” on campus on Tuesday, October 9th, 2017. The event was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco. Prof. Yuan Sha from Central Conservatory of Music, one of top Chinese Guzheng performing artists and educators, was the presenter and performer of the event accompanied by outstanding musicians including Guzheng performers Bai Yang and Cen Jiawei, pianist Zhang Zhengchen, young percussionist Wu Hao from Central Conservatory of Music, and flute performer Ai Hongbo from Central Academy of Drama. Two local artists - Cellist Xu Bo and Violinist Victor Xie were invited to perform with the guest performers from Beijing, China.

The distinguished guests attending today's event include Vise President Ann Sherman, Dr. Yanbo Wu, Associate Vice President of San Francisco State University, Deputy Consul General Zha Liyou and Culture Counselor Xiao Xiayong from Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in San Francisco. Over 300 audiences coming from different departments, offices, and San Francisco Bay Area enjoyed every minute of the performance tonight. The sweet and beautiful traditional Chinese music combined with Chinese poems touched audience's hearts and echoed in the sky above SF State campus.

This presentation and performance, aiming at enhancing cultural communication between China and the US, focus on the cross-cultural differences and cultural exchanges through music. The charm of Chinese folk music showed the common values of the people from different language and cultural background— "be loyal to country, love nature, treasure friendship, be true to love”.

The performance had the Chinese music stories as a central clue to proceed and was accompanied with different combinations of Guzheng, piano, guitar and harp for songs such Lofty Mountains and Flowing Water, A Moonlit Night on the Spring River, The Peacock Flies to the Southeast, Lasting Yearnings, Travel in the Desert,Phoenix Hairpin,Red All Over the River, and Lotus is in Blossom above the Water, etc.

Music is a language that transcends boundaries. We hope that the "Chinese Music Culture Tour" will bring the Chinese and American people closer to each other's spiritual world, understand the common emotional expression in different cultural backgrounds, and thus promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.
